Where should the rear door wiring run?

I have to replace the rear door on my 1991 Defender 110, but want to neaten up the wiring to the wiper motor and heated screen. Where should it run? Is it fed through holes drilled in the vertical frame members, or is it designed to hang loose and look scruffy?

Screen wire's runs through frame and wiper wiring is covered by door card and all exit near the center hinge.

Mine runs through a small rubber tube jobber (see below)

Standard fitment is a fairly manky-looking bit of hardboard covered in vinyl. Mudstuff do a rear door trim which is similar to the type fitted to Td5 models. It looks good on a station wagon but isn't cheap. Other options are a piece of checker plate which would be fine on a van model.
