in the 50's pumps were high heels cause they pumped up your calfs (back of the leg) to make it more shapley

nar - always been flat soled shoes. Came from the air bladder inside em which was pumped up, except int states where the high heeled shoe bore sum relationship to the old fashioned pump and handle.
