When they were young...

Just discovered this snippet of footage of Clarkson economy testing a 4.0 back in the 90s.

3 things to take from this:

1) the figure it produces..
2) the price of the petrol!
3) the number on the odometer; they were young once

Never had single figures out of mine, Clarkson does have a lead foot though.

Cricket, worst I've seen out of my 4.6 was 11mpg on the road ( really bad commuting in stop start traffic - on LPG and I don't spare the horses....)

What WAS he doing with that car?

Hopefully just heavy footing it, or the trip computers are universally optimistic

If a car with 1200 miles on the clock does 9 MPG i'd like to see Clarkson drive one with 100,000 miles on the clock along the same route. Makes some of the MPG claims posted on here look a little silly.

UK MPG is higher than US MPG on every car

Of course it would be uncharacteristic of Clarkson & crew to exaggerate anything to make a feature.

Just as it would for a V8 owner to come up with ridiculous MPG figures to justify owning one for the burble. Lets be fair they drink titty when it comes down to the real truth.

They do like to drink, like i said though, never had single figures from mine even with all the short journeys over xmas. Get them on a steady run & they are not so bad. End of the day, that's why LPG is so popular with these.

He's using UK gallons; 17:06 "by dividing it by 4.546"

If you were given a nearly brand new,very fast rangerover and told to drive it about london for a bit but dont worry how much fuel it uses cos the production team are paying it.
Hands up who would drive it economical?
