It seems that most replacement s for defenders come shod on new steel wheels. A lot of the threads on here talk of new tyres coming on modulars etc...

I don't understand why you don't just reuse the existing wheels. Most land rovers come with them, after all.

Might be a stupid question, but is there any reason why I can't keep my existing wheels when putting new tyres on and save a few pennies?

Also, I'm led to believe I have wolf wheels on? How do I tell the difference between wolfs, modulars and standard steels?

I have two sets, one for the road and an extreme mud set so I don't have to live with a compromise... When you buy online it hardly works out cheaper to get just the tyres, plus you then have to take them to a garage to get them fitted and balanced etc. Most places round where i live have told me they are too big for them to balance as well

It is not uncommon for people to fit larger tyres (265/75x16 for instance) and these have to be fitted on a minimum of a 7-inch rim which the normal LR steel wheel is not which means an upgrade of some kind is required. As many places sell a package it is often easier for people to have them delivered ready to fit rather than buy the wheels from one place, the tyres from another and then have them fitted & balanced somewhere local.

Off topic - sorry!

But I've got a set of 16" x 7" rims for sale in the classifieds,if anybody wants some non-standards

I've got nearly new white 8 spokes on mine with some Pirelli Scorpion road biased tyres. I have ordered some Insa Turbo Dakars on black mods. The reason is simple as Litch says ... I can simply change the whole set on my driveway! ... You will then find the old ones much easier to sell on fleabay as a package. The mods to buy seperately cost about £160 a set but with tyres at Craddocks are only about £100 extra. I'll get this back easily when selling the old ones. All come ready balanced and ready to rock! ;)
