Afternoon all,

I have a 2004 TD4 and have some bought 15" alloys with dimples, but it would appear that isn't a guarantee of fit. I've put one on the front and it clears the caliper but my pads are a couple of years old.

Having trawled through all wheels posts I'm still confused. The serial number on these wheels is RC114770XXX, anyone know if these will definitely fit?

If you have the vehicle and rims, surely you are the best placed person to try them out and answer the question.
 
might make a difference to the speedo td4 used to have 16inch wheels now has 17 inch wheels ,I have always found it odd they quote the size of the wheel in inches but the width and the tyre in mm or am I just getting too old

Yeh, I agree its strange that imperial/metric thing!

I've always assumed the tyre wall height is different on the 15, 16 & 17" wheels to give the same overall diameter (for the speedo). My 15" wheels run 195/80 as standard (and still do) which gives an overall diameter of 27.3" according to Tire Size Calculator.

You'd think I'd know what the standard tyres are on 16" and 17" wheels given the number of tyre threads on here - but I don't so can't compare. But that site recons 205/70-16 gives the same diameter and 215/60-17 is basically the same.

I've got a 2002 and on mine are 215/65/16 tyres

agree , wondered why they do half imperial / metric

by ur cal they come up as 27 inch dia

They don't always do imperial/metric.

A standard Defender size is still a 7.60 x 16

And you see lots of off road tyres listed in imperial measurements, e.g.

31.10.50 R 15

As for the hybrid of 205/80R16

Well they tried going fully metric in the 1980's (see some BMW's/Jags of that era). But it never really washed.

Anyhow, it's only part metric, e.g.

205 is mm
80, the sidewall height is a percentage of the width, so not really metric or imperial
 
Let me put it another way.......... If the wheels clear the calipers and rotate freely, your good to go.

Brake pad thickness has no bearing if the wheels will fit or not

OP is actually right - I have an 02 but run the older wheels on it. New brake pads hold the caliper out just far enough to catch the wheel unless I use spacers (just some washers).
 
Ages since I did my pads - but I thought the capilers were 'solid' and pushed plungers inwards towards the pads. I didn't think the external area covered by the calipers would increase with new pads - just the plungers retract further into them.

I'm sure I've seen quite a few 15" 'Boost' style alloys on Freelanders that shared larger wheels from the factory - enough to make me think that they were standard options - surely LR wouldn't have buggered around with different calipers and spacers from new - maybe for the 2.5s but not the 1.8 & diesels.

There must have been something though for you to need 'dodgy' spacers :)

The calipers slide back and forth on pins, and when the pads are thick and the piston fully retracted they stick out ever so slightly. As far as i know the pre -02 models had a slightly different brake set-up and so the pre -02 wheels don't fit on -02 onwards vehicles without spacers.

'Dodgy spacers' eh? How very dare you! Seriously, though, they came with the car and have done at least 60k miles without incident. If I forget to put them on after pad change the wheel fouls the caliper.

Having spoken to my local main dealer, they reckon any wheels with dimples/holes will indeed fit.

They also confirmed that not all later wheels do have the dimples!
