Today I was lucky enough to have a rare day off so I thought I'd get a few landy bits done.

I'm getting low on tread for all 4 tyres, so when I saw that a local guy was scraping a 2 door with 17 inch rims, I thought I'd have a look.

All 4 tyres had good tread & he wanted £150 for the set.

I'm running 16", so a move upto 17" I thought shouldn't cause too many issues.

So I departed with my £150 notes & toddled off to my local garage for £10 would take the 16's off & put on the 17's.

Looks great I thought as I looked in the reflection, handbrake off....not moving.
It seems that the 3 spoke 17's bind straight unto the rear drum, therefore bowing it slightly.

I'm not that mechanically minded, but am I right in thinking that either I need a spacer or I just cannot run on 17's ?

Hope you can help before I have to go back to the guy selling the alloys & ask for my wonga back.

my FL is 04 facelift.
The 17's are from a 3 door sport 235/55/17

All the best.

Are they the one in the pic below 3 spoke I had 5 spoke on but changed them for the three spoke and they are k on my 04 plate facelift

17 inch wheels are fine on a face lift as the later ones were fitted with themselves but I do not know about your tyres mine are 225 55 17 maybe yours are a bit wider

Not sure on the dates but earlier model (pre 02?) FL wheels won't fit later types without spacers. Our old FL had this set-up (just a few washers) and did 70,000 miles for us without incident.

I think the later-type wheels have the 5 little dots recessed into the casting as per Alibro's pics.

I'd get away with some heavy duty washers ? Until I get some spacers ordered. Sounds like a plan.

Is it safe to do ?

They should fit ok. There is a situation where pre 2000 rims won't fit over the brakes of the post 2000 FL1 without spacers. However I think those style of rims didn't come out until after the 2000 redesign. If that's the case, they should fit.
However you can fit thin 5mm spacers to allow the rims to clear the brake component's. ;)

From our experience, yes. Each wheel stud had three washers totalling about 4-5mm thick. FL wheel nuts centre the wheel so you have to tighten them evenly in a star pattern, and I always torqued them to 115 Nm. But you'd do that anyway, of course :) ;)

... unlike my first (and last) visit to KwikFit where the apes just blasted them round the clock with a big air impact. Then charged me twice the price of my local fitter, and added on 'extras' like a new valve and balancing (not in the price already??) and nitrogen inflation (which I didn't want). Also tried to charge £80 for a slow puncture repair on the spare, dropped to £60 when I squeaked (local tyre man charges £12).

Grrrr....

Happy New Year everyone!
