I've got some spoked steel modular wheels and the paints had its day. Going to repaint them in black (currently white) Should I just use hammerite after I've sanded them down for durability or something else? Simple thing I know, but wanted to know if there's something better. Could spray them, but dont think it will be very durable.

Might help u there mate. From my experience. Prepare is the key. And do it now when it is sunny. Harden the paint. First. Use wirebrush on a drill and lightly strip the shiny paint off then blow air on it and use wet/dry sandpaper and rubb it then use primer two coats and lightly sand it again with water to a smooth finish if dents use body filler etc and sand down and then use matt high heat black paint normally engine paint etc withstand heat. Use that and spray it on the wheel lightly then when dry second coat fully and then use wet/dry sandpaper sand lightly. Then clean it and use clean lacquer If u do every day. It can be done in three days etc all four wheels. Don't rush it etc. also there is a clip on u tube etc

Get them sand blasted then powder coated. When you get them back run a bead of silicone around the seams inside and out where the wheel dish joins the rim and they will last a lifetime. Its what I'm going to do to mine when funds and time allow.

I bought a sand blaster attachment for my pressure washer, worked a treat getting the paint off, a coat of acid etch primer sprayed on then 3 coats of Hammerite smooth sprayed on and they look great.

Powder coating is good but it'll be expensive compared to a couple of cans of paint

Guy at work took his wheels to a shot blasters, they did 5 for £20

Sprayed mine white - same as body - to keep original, so was a car paint shop made up aerosol.

No reason why black hammerite (smooth) wouldn't do the job.

Clear lacquer was just from halfords - it goes a fair way and wasn't expensive

Key is to get as much rust off as you can with a wire brush drill attachment, lightly key the surface with wet and dry paper, thorougly clean and dry, and then use an anti rust primer before spraying.

See you didnt bother to take the tyres of the rim and paint the whole wheel - just the faces. Spose, the insides havent been exposed to the elements.

You'll get a better finish taking the tyres off - but I couldn't be bothered. I've read that you can 'crack' the tyre off the rim by lowering the suspension onto the side of the tyre, but decided to carefully mask instead.

If you make sure the tyre/rims are dry (you'll see the hot air gun in one of the pics :D), and then carefully run little lengths of masking tape (about 4 - 5" at a time) right up to the rim (you can slide them under the lip between tyre and the rim edge), and then use that masked area to tape opened bin liners too you'll be able to spray right to the edge of the rim and keep paint off the tyres.

It is really money issue etc. for a brand new look. Sandblast and powder coated whatever colour u want etc. for a good look on the cheap. Rattle cans etc finish off with lacquer So basically your choice mate

Yeah not got to look pro, just gotta do the Job. My doors need painting soon too - but i think I'll take them to a bodyshop. I think for the wheels ill just sand them /roughen them up, black hammerite spray paint for durability and a coat of laquer - job done!
