Wheel nuts!

Hi,
I have a RRc and I have replaced the standard alloys with some steel wheels and BFG's. The result - killer whell wobble / vibration.

Now, I've had all teh wheels balanced, checked pressures, wear, and all the obvious things.

I think that the problem may be that I've just used the old wheel nuts from the alloys which don't have enough of a taper to prevent any movement??

Could this be the problem or am I talking a load of ole pony?
If it is the problem, what type of nuts do I need and where from??

with steel wheels you should use steel nuts, but i think the reason is more to do with steel/ally corrosion than different tapers on the nuts, are the steel wheels new as 1 might have a slight buckle especially if its been used off road, I bought a set off 90 boy and 1 of those had a buckle and you can't balance it out.

They seem to be true and balanced up just fine.
When they sit on the studs there is a degree of movement - not very much - but might be enough if the nuts don't have a taper to tale it up?

Don't know about Classics, but the P38 requires spiggott rings if you're changing the wheels to non P38 wheels. Are they proper RRC wheels?

If they're aftermarket then this might be your problem.

They basically fit on the hub and centre the wheels correctly if the hub hole is too big.

I got mine on fleabay, but hopefully someone will confirm/take the **** out of my suggestion shortly as I'm only guessing. I don't recall hearing about this problem with the RRC...

The fact that there is some movement is bad though and probably the source of your vibration.

I would start with buying steel wheel nuts from ebay you have already said there is a bit of movement.

on a disco (same fitment i think) you cant use alloy nuts with steel wheels and vice versa iirc

steel wheels are not suitable for use with alloy nuts.its dangerous and dont hold em on.get em changed for less than a quid a nut and sell the alloy nuts on ebay.do it immeadiately
