Hi!

I'm new to both Land Rovers and the forum, so hi!

I'm about the change the brakes on my 2010 LR Freelander 2, but I've fallen at the first hurdle.

The wheel nuts appear to have caps on them, which I can't remove. They feel plastic and they move on the actual nut, I've tried using a cover removal tool I have for a different car, but that hasn't worked, and I've tried using needle nose pliers and a screwdriver, but nothing seems to make them move.

I'm sure I'm missing something but they feel like they must come off, as a 21mm and 22mm socket is too small for them, but a 23mm feels too big as if will slip and damage them. Is there a technique or special tool to remove them?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Post a picture. However if the nuts have shiny caps, then that's normal, and you use a 22mm hex socket on them. However it's a known issue for the nut inside the caps to rust, which then causes the stainless cap to expand, making it difficult to get the socket on.
A few of mine have this issue, but I only need to tap the socket on, then undo them in the normal way.

Thanks for your reply, a 22mm socket went on after a bit of a tap and I’ve now ordered an extra long bar to try and get them undone so I suspect that you’re right with some rust getting behind them. I’ll replace the nuts when I get them off and give everything a good clean!
