Hi all ,looks like I need to replace the disc on the rear as its grating when braking and feels scored, so doing both sides. Then as I've got it apart I thought about doing the wheel bearings at the same time, I've done them on a defender but from looking on ebay these are different. Is it best to buy the hub and bearing in one as I see there isn't a vast difference in price ? And is there any advice anybody can give or tips on doing the Job ? and is the front pretty much the same as doing the back ?
cheers Ian

If you have grating on brake application and the disc is scored maybe you should have changed the pads some time ago.

I proberbly should have, but the grating has only started yesterday and there was no advisories on the mot so thought they were ok, and didn't notice any problems with braking so never checked.

Maintenance is king. A once a year MOT is not good enough i am afraid, you need to look yourself. Had a customer once who brought his car in for service. I told him his oil had been very low when i did the oil and filter change. He said that was because i had not topped it properly at his last service. This idiot had never checked his oil level for six months.

I completely agree with you on this and until recently the WOF (Kiwi MOT) tests here were every 6 months which is a sort of pain in the arse - but an annual check on things like brakes is just to far apart. People tend not to check things between MOTs so its much safer to do them every 6 months. That is especially true in the UK where in 12 months rust can create so many dangers! So I'm glad the tests are 6 monthly here both for my car and
any that might be hurtling towards me! Obviously I check oils/coolant a lot more frequently than that.

Unfortunately they've changed the rules now and post 2000 cars only need an annual WOF - backward step - and as cars have to be more and more safe these days with airbags, ABS, crumple zones etc, its quite bizarre!
