Personally I would only change the one Mozz, as it's on the nearside it's probably thumped a few kerbs in it's life.
There is an ABS sensor on every wheel and by all accounts they can be buggers to get out.
Are you sure it's a wheel bearing and not the CV joint?

HI KEITH ,thanks for quick reply ,ive had it looked at yesterday by r/rover specialist down nr my holiday home in lincolnshire and he says its the wheel bearing ? but i will get the cv joints checked as well .. cheers mate ,mozz

I have done this recently, you have two options a complete hub or just the wheel bearing. I did just the wheel bearing but I did have access to a 20ton press at work. You localmotor factors wont stock a p38 bearing as they will give you a classic bearing which is rumoured to fit the p38 as us owners know this isnt the case.

Mine was a right pain to get the disc off because of the interference fit and rust build up also knocking the hub out was a pain too. Lucky old me had plenty of big hammers and heat. It took approx 1.5 hr to remove. The abs sensor was ok to remove take your time and easy it out plenty of lube and gentle persuasion left and right whilst levering with a small screwdriver or lever bar.

Once hub is in hand soak in lubricate and lubricate it some more I was in no rush and lube mine for 2 days. Then comes the removal of old bearing all I can say is good luck and hope the hub doesnt break. Once bearing is out and the flange has the inner race stuck on it you have two ways to remove cut it off or nearly all the way through it and then a quick hit with a chisel should break it or cut it with an oxyceatlean torch.

If you got this far I wil congratulate you

Just fit new bearing making sure all surfaces are cleaned and lightly greased will aid in the inserting department. Refit hub to car and all is well. Cost is approx £60 if you do it or buy a new hub at dealer for £550 -£600 or patterned hub for £250-£300

I hope this helps you mozz

Just do the one bearing is my advice I did mine a few years ago on about 100k miles now have over 160k and the others are still going strong I did the bearing and not the hub and its ok if you just go at it steady

Hi Mozzie...PM me your email address and I will send you some info on replacing the bearings.
Despite what you have read regarding use of heavy hammers etc., I can assure you that you wont break anything as drop forged steel does not break !!!

I replaced around 6 pairs over the years without any of them exploding or breaking into a thousand pieces !!!

I had to use a big hammer to get the disc off and get the hub out of the carrier if yours fell out I salute you but with the interference fit and rust build up you need to knock them out also when pressing out the bearing and you got 20t of pressure on it and it doesnt budge sometime shocking with a hammer will remove it. I have done hundreds of bearing due to my job and they are all the same it involves using a hammer. As with the drop forged steel yes it shouldnt break but you need to go careful as mozz said he isnt to mechanical but more electrical based kind of guy I was airing on the side of caution
