I have a strange sound emanating from the truck.
When I turn a corner I get a sound only described as like dragging an old bog chain across the tarmac ?
If I had to guess I'd say wheel bearings but everything feels OK.

Any ideas?

Keith.

p.s. I have checked for old bog chains under the truck :)

If you're on about a Disco then I'd say CV joint, but as you're on about a truck, I don't know.

It's a TD5,why would CV's only make the noise when cornering?

'cos they work straight through the bearings inside the CV joint without subjecting them to rotating forces too, when going straight. The bearings don't move.

When they're cornering the forces have to go round the angles of the rolling bearings, which do now move .. so if there's any wear or lack of lube etc it doesn't work as well and makes a noise.

Very simplistic answer ...

So if I bung a shedload of grease in & it goes away (albeit temporarily) that would identify the problem?

Cheers

Should do .. depends if it's dry of grease or rusted too .. and whether the bearings are spherical or flat-spotted etc.

OTOH, £30 ish for a new CV joint isn't a great deal to pay ... and you have to unbolt everything to get to where you can grease it anyway.

It could also be wheel bearings you know, or a combination of other stuff too, like UJ's or diff slop .. CV's is favourite by quite a way though .. :)
