hi all,
had my MOT a few months ago now and because i had recently changed the track rod ends, i had it tracked at the same time, all has been goodand the front tyres have been wearing flat and good until now that is! it appears the n/s tyre has gone virtually bald on the outside in a very short period of time, upon inspection the wheel is leaning in something terrible, not towing in, but leaning in, also, there is a little play when wiggleing the wheel, im no mechanic and new to the landy but intend doing what i can myself, can anyone please help in telling me the possible causes for these symptoms?
many thanks
Owen

Jack the wheel up. If the play is both horizontal (grab both sides of the wheel) and vertical (grab top and bottom of wheel) it's probably wheel bearings. If it's vertical only then it's the swivel bushes/bearings.

Excess play in the swivel or wheel bearings will cause the wheel to lean in at the top.

Hmm, could be the bottom swivel bearing badly buggered - I'd expect the wheel to lean the other way if there was a hub/swivel problem.

my tyres are 31-10.50-15, so quite wide, could this be a cause for the leaning out? instead of in? i guess i need to maybe dismantle but then it'd be a shame not to have the parts on hand if i do find anything, dunno, tough one!

well i managed to change the swivel bearing and railko bush today, did the wheel bearing at the same time, not much wear on the removed items, feels a little better to drive thou but still have the dredded leaning wheel
gonna fit my para's tomorrow, looking forward to that!!

Id take it to someone who could redo the tracking but the camber also. Some places are better than others with that sort of thing. There's a place near me that can measure wheel alignment camber tracking and all sorts of things like that. They always give a printout that looks like a Christmas tree, but it tells you everything thats wrong.

Maybe try to find somewhere local to you that's a bit better at aligning wheels than just a simple tracking place.

To test wheel bearings Jack it up so the wheel is off the ground and try to shake it side to side and top to bottom. Use a lever if necessary. You'll be able to feel that there's play there if the bearings are gone.

Also while your under it, look for anything that might not be done up right. I once had my tracking done at kwikfit on my car, only for it to go back out within a month or so. Had it done again and the guy said there were two nuts that were supposed to be tightened up against the adjustable bit that does the tracking to hold it in place. The guy at kwikfit had left them undone.
