wheel bearing going ????????

hi lads , i think i have possible wheel bearing going ???? ,its a 2000 v8 4.6 vogue auto .. whilst driving im getting a droning noise from front end and very prominent when steering left or right ??? how do i define what it is and which side its coming from .??????????? im no mechanic by the way ... i was thinkin about running it in to a local garage and asking them to check it out ,, so how would they do that ????? by jacking it up ???????? or what ?? any help would be appreciated as seems to be going worse by the week .. cheers lads and kind regards ,, in anticipation ..mozz :confused::confused::confused::confused:
 
Had 2 bearings go like that on my Transit Mozz, never could find any play in them. When I cut the bearings open, the tracks were badly pitted.
I waited until the noise got so loud that I could identify which wheel it was.

I know he said he was no mechanic....... but my first thought wasn't he must be a doctor then :p :D :D :D








Make your own stethoscope, Lift each wheel in turn, Put a large screwdriver to the hub and spin the wheel put your ear to t'other end of said screwdriver ;)

Mechanics stethoscopes are very handy tools. Not a lot of good to a doctor though. Ya can't turn one wheel at a time both rears or both fronts have to be off the ground. :D:D

Yeah sorry I was being flipant I dunt expect many folk have got either :)

You can if it's jacked up and the other wheels are chocked and it's outta gear ;)

and I know ya know that really you is just testin :biggrin1:

The VCU ensures you cannot turn one wheel whether the others are chocked or not. You have to have 2 fronts off the ground.
 
wammy ??? im sat here laughing and crying :D:D:D at your post ,,,stethoscope ???????? im defo no doctor but i do have a white coat in fact im wearing it now wating for the men in a yellow van to arrive to take me away , but ive heard their calling for you on the way ,,!!!!!!! ha ha ha but i think i know what you mean ;) well done ,,,hope your well ,cheers oh by the way you were right last week battery fcxxxd cheers for that one ,,, i will nip to garage later and get them to jack it up and check ,,, kind regards MOZZ:):)

As well as 12& 6 you should always do 3& 9 o clock as a wheel bearing if badly worn wil have play in all those directions 12& 6 could have play due to worn steering ball joints less Noticeable at 3 &. 6

I'm being Pedantic again ;)
 
Due to their construction and the fact that they are balls and not rollers. You can have a pretty noisy bearing that shows no movement at all.

THIS LOT SOUND LIKE A S & M SPAM SITE not a range rover forum ...i suppose i will have to watch how i word these threads in future :D:D they have all got too much time on their hands ,,,, honestly it was only a question about wheel bearings !!!!!!!!!!

Raise all 4 wheels and then get someone to drive the car whilst you stand with your ear very close to the wheel until you find which side it is coming from. Shake the wheels and feel for play or use a lever under the wheels to check for play. You could just be lazy and wait for the noise to get worse.
 
Mozz, when my FR wheel bearing went kaput, there was no droning noise, at least not that loud that i'd hear it over all other droning noises in the Range. But the wheel movement was VERY prominent, i'm speaking about 6mm lateral movement at the tire tread. I actually got th check it out because it was squeaking, not droning.

Well, i hope that it's not the bearing, but if it is, bay-of-e has Timken bearings for ~70 pounds. much cheaper than the hub, which is around 240 pounds, and LR will only sell you these as a part. Mind you, the bearing needs a pretty hefty press (30 ton) to move, unless they use CO2 and a blow torch to separate the bearing from the hub.
