What's this hose for? Affecting performance?

Hello again,
I have got my first ever Landy, a 1996 300Tdi, I'm looking forward to working on it a lot as I get tools and knowledge!

I've encountered my first problem

The disco doesn't seem to have a lot of power, it takes a long time on a flat road to get up to 60mph and struggles to get up to 75mph, and when cruising at 65 I get to an average hill and it drops down to 50mph. I'm planning on changing the fuel, air and oil filters this weekend and I've also stuck a couple of bottles of STPiesel injector in the tank for good measure today.

I was having a look in the engine bay earlier and discovered a split in a short piece of hose. Could this be the cause of reduced power?
The 1st photo shows a stand-off view: The short piece of bendy hose (centre of photo) is below the large air intake pipe.
The 2nd photo shows a close-up view of the hose.

What's the hose part of? and where can I get a new piece?

Also, I've ordered a K&N air filter to replace the standard one, Anyone used these before? Any improvements?

I ain't looking for a racing machine, I just think that it should have a bit more poke than it does.

that is the hose from your turbo to the intercooler and then to the inlet manifold. replace it....if it has a split and is leaking air, it means yer engine is not getting its full supply of pressurised air, so yer performance will definately b down

while ya at it, check all your pipes after the turbo.....the must be no leaks at all....any leak will drop yer performance.

Was it not making a Hell of a whooshing noise?

The turbo can compress air in that pipe at FIFTEEN psi, which is easily enough to blow tyres up!

Replace that one bendy hose pipe and then try the car out.
We bet it goes a LOT better, and makes a lot less noise too.

The only whistling noise I notice is when I take my foot off the accelerator, NOT when accelerating though, I though that it was just tyre noise.

I've been quoted 42 quid for a new hose from the LR dealer - OUCH!!

But after searching online I can find it as cheap as 8 quid!

it's only a bit of rubber hose! - the pattern part will be fine.

next job is to ditch the EGR - do a search on here, there's loads of info tellin yer about it.

By the way, is the car auto or manual?

Also, as Treworgy says, ditch the EGR valve, it makes a positive difference that you will notice in either fuel consumption or power.

when you replace your hose and drop in yer K&N... give your whole intake the overhaull.


Thats:
EGR blank
New top air hose
Clean out the inlet manifold (EGR marmite!)
Flush the intercooler

She'll pull like a train in comparison, after that!
Take you a few hours to sort that lot out.

Sorry for being a dumb ass, but what do I do to overhaul it?

Also, I've been told that the K&N won't make any difference unless I'm upgrading other bits n bobs, What is your guys thoughts on this?

Cancel that battenburg - I've just read the whole post instead of the first sentence - I've got to slow down!! Should be easy enough now that I've got a landy!!

When you see all that Molasses/Marmite crap left behind by the EGR... you'll wanna clean it!!!

Just to update.
I've fitted the EGR blanking plate and cleaned all the crude out of the inlet manifold and it's done the trick. The disco can cruise at 70 on the motorway now without my foot to the floor and it only dips to about 60 on moderate hills and recovers fairly quickly.

IS it worth fitting a K & N induction kit? I've seen one on ebay for 45 squid.

I'd just go for the replacement K&N filter, rather than the induction kit - I fitted one to my 300tdi disco and noticed a marked improvement - It is then easy enough to replace with a std paper filter if you are going anywhere that is particularly dusty etc.

Ok - I'll give that a try.

the drop in K&N filter panel will also allow you to put a standard snorkel on if you want to.
