Hybrid turbos are built up with bits from other turbo's, slightly larhger vanes etc, VNT (Variable Nozzel Turbo) or VVT (Variable Vane Turbo) utilise a secondary set of vanes around the main turbo wheel that force the air through faster when the turbo is spinning slowly and open up when the turbo is up to full speed.
I have a VNT on my 300tdi, the pickup is earlier and longer lasting than the original Garrett. The other advantage is that it produces more air than the standatrd (OEM) Garrett.

Yeah i'm running a 200 engine with a newish std 300 turbo but now i've fitted a roof tent and camping stuff i need more power.
 
As soon as you go away from 'standard' you need a boost gauge and a way of monitoring your EGT.
You can get more power by feeding in more fuel = altering the fuel pump.
You can increase the boost on a standard turbo by changing the waste gate valve, push rod length. This opens the wastegate later allowing a higher pressure into the inlet manifold.
A little bit of both will give you more power, too much and you can damage the engine as it runs too hot, its a fine line.

In my experience a larger intercooler and a boost pin helps...
At the end of the day the 200/300tdi's are very similar ...
The 200 gives 111hp at 4000rpm and 146 lbft at 1800rpm.
The 300 gives 113hp at 4000rpm and 195lbft at 1800rpm.

aren't they almost the same torque output?:confused:

interested in vnt though, have an audi v6tdi vnt to possibly fit on my Defender 200tdi engineo_O

I think they are very close, different sources give different values although having looked again and yes, I was wrong the 200tdi is nearer to 190ftlb (not 150), the 300tdi is very slightly more powerful but in reality it depends on how thick the skin on your rice pudding is ...
I got my VNT through Alisport (TurboTechnics). "Don't mess with the waste gate" said the man, "use a bleedoff valve if you must" ... I bought one but haven't fitted it yet :)

Absolutely, definitely, certainly.

My 300 is tuned to 146Hp, and the EGT's can climb VERY quickly ..... The issue is that the cyl head will anneal at 720 degrees C* - fine at 719, but at 720, the "engine", is not an engine any more, just a lump of iron, with some soft ali on top....

* = this figure is for the CH's specific alloy - it is much lower for "ordinary" ali :eek:

Yeah i've done all that and have etg and boost gauge but have the actuater set at between 1.2 and 1.3 and it goes well i know it will go more but rather than mess anymore with it i'd try the VNT but been looking and they are a bit pricey so mite go for an Hybrid instead :)

How is your VNT actuated in relation to accelerator input - is it via vacuum or have you got a throttle position sensor installed on the injection pump to run electrics for the VNT actuator?
Quite interesting setup you have there with the twin intakes on the manifold, would love to see more photos of your setup.

No electronics, its purely mechanical. I believe the directional vanes are spring balanced and as they spin quicker centrifigal force opens them out...
