37mpg out of a Tdi is either a lie, a mis-calculation or steady driving at a constant 45mph with no hills.

Chances are their ODO is well out, so accurate calculations are not going t happen.

Maybe I'm being harsh and maybe it is possible, but if you weren't 'really' trying I'd struggle to believe based on the fact most people get 28-30mpg.

But you never know

The Engine I am running in my defender is an ex Range rover 3.9. It was converted back to twin carb when it had LPG fitted, but it still has electronic ignition, It is also fiited with twin K&N's and Piper cams. Next on shopping list is a Janspeed exhaust.

Hope you have good brakes! Bet its thirsty.

The brakes are standard Defender brakes. I don't drive at any more than 70-80 mph, which is what the diesel engined vehicles are capable of, it just gets there an awful lot quicker. Fuel consumption on gas is about 15 mpg, but as LPG currently costs 72.9 ppl, the running costs are roughly the same as the diesel.

Easy fit. Looking about at the moment. Pretty much sold on a 300tdi with the trimmings.

I can't really comment on how easy the conversion was as it was a V8 to start with. So it was basically just a straight forward like for like swap, especially as the EFI was taken off & carbs fitted.

TD5's = underbonnet fires, knackered turbos and broken injectors!

2/300 TDI = Not a bad engine but not nice to work on imo!

V8 = the best engine but not for range or fuel costs!

The others are pretty much obsolete,

2 1/4's Have poor power to weight ratio's and are poor on fuel!

not heard of underbonnet fires in td5's, or knackered turbo/busted injectors very often

Underbonnet fires are very common in TD5's! Trust me i work on them everyday.

200tdi

200Tdi: tough as old boots and bush repairable, 300Tdi slightly more refined but never liked the drivebelt system.

200tdi done 130,000 never missed a beat. Change the oil regularly and it looks like it will go on forever.
Update: 2013. Its now done 150.000 miles and still never misses a beat.
This is the only Landy I have owned or driven for that matter so I have nothing to compare it with. I have had faster cars with great sounding engines like a TR6 or a V8 Rover but I do like the sound of my 200tdi rattling along. Its what I would describe as a lazy low reeving engine like driving a truck.
When this engines does go I will replace it with the same or get it rebuilt. This could be a case of ignorance being bliss. What you don't know you wont miss. But I am happy with it.
