What's that noise?

A new day, a new noise!! Can anyone help? Drove to work, no problem. Drove back and started hearing an awful sound of metal on metal.... can't see anything detached. The hand brake has been acting up lately - hoping it could be something to do with that?

The noise just happens sporadically. Not dependent on clutch, acceleration or braking etc... don't even want to drive it now just in case I'll make it worse. Should I just take it to a general mechanic (which is really close by) or attempt to drive it to a Land Rover specialist? (About a 30min drive away from me).

Could it be a wheel bearing? I guess there's a lot of things it could be.... but any suggestions would help.

Is it dependent on road surface? Cornering?
Is it a grinding/knocking/tapping/banging..?
Any ideas as to whereabouts it might be coming from? Front or rear left or right?

Sounds near the mid to rear... a grinding sound (can't tell if it's left or right yet)
Happens when driving slow, straight, turn....no difference - on a road surface.

its not happening constantly (it comes and goes) - and no difference if turning etc...

they tend to break up over time (if not greased up) and make a nice grinding/squealing noise. sometimes they can completely disintegrate making you stop the car to have a look!

Silly question but if it's either of those problems... would it be ok to drive to a mechanic.... closest one I can get to is about a 5min drive but not sure they work on Landys, and I know if another guy who doesn't specializes in them but has worked on some about 15mins away. Or should I get a trailer?

wheel bearings can suddenly "go" as well and like to make a nice crucnchy/squealing noise to let you know!

should be if its not surging, i.e. if it feels like the brakes are being pressed a bit. worth checking though!

Get underneath see if there's play by trying to twist the prop. If there's movement in the joint there's a problem. If they're tight the uj's are okay
Try turn your handbreak drum too. See if resisance/grind when handbreak off. Should move a little without having to roll the vehicle

Also I wouldn't drive on knackered ujs after seeing how they can flip cars
Like a grenade going off if unlucky and going fast

Just to add the u/js need checking with the wheels chocked, handbrake off and gearbox in nuetral.

best way is with which ever prop your checking is to have one wheel on that axle jacked clear of the ground apart from play joints can seize prop needs to feel smooth as you rotate it and you can still feel for play
