I've been told about a 300TDi Defender virtually the same as mine but not in the same condition. It's on an L and it's a 300TDi van. The rear axle is just rebuilt but it was a project that's been sat for 18 months and the chassis and bulkhead are knackered. There are spares with it and the engine is good.

What is a reasonable starting point for negotiations? Just seeing if it's affordable and if it is I might buy it and re-build it onto a galv chassis and bulkhead then once fully rebuilt I can switch to using it and re-build my current one the same way.......

Job to say without seeing it. If bulkhead and chassis need major repair or replacement I'd start the negotiations at £1500!

It's average condition for the rest of the stuff as far as I can see. Not sure on doors yet either. Been sat on my mates drive for 18 months now and I think he's lost interest in working on it.

+1

With a vehicle like that it's going to be more important to work out your available budget to get it in to a decent state to use. What you actually pay to buy it will be a fraction of what you will spend. Depending on what standard you want to get it to of course.

I've already PMd stu about a bumper, roll cage, light covers and rock/tree sliders then there will be a galv chassis and bulkhead. I'll be converting it to a cab. There are a lot of new spares with it so if I can get it with those bits I will be happy. I have a disco 300TDi for a project but if I get this I'll sell that off......

That's an expensive chicken shed.

That's ridiculous..... I'm hoping to get this for £1000 with the new spares but we are looking at 2 fully reconditioned axles and props. The interior is ok and the engine is sound etc The chassis and bulkhead will not be cheap but though....

Makes me feel better about the amount of money I have spent on my rebuild. Well, ...........slightly better  the receipts soon mount up!

I contemplated saying £800 earlier. Of course it depends on lots of things we can't see in relation to the condition of the rest of the body and miles on the clock etc. Went +1 on the £500 influenced by what I have spent on mine. If cowasaki wants to go galv chassis and perhaps galv bulkhead, then that's £2.5K + straight away on top of the £500 original cost. I would start as cheeky as I dare.

900 notes that went for! Personally I can't see the logic, unless they have another vehicle or a shed load of parts they can raid, is it really worth all the extra work and money to get it back on the road?

Yeah, saw that. Hard to believe. On the side you can see there isn't a panel on it that hasn't been battered. Broken gear box. That's an expensive 200Tdi engine :)

Gob smacked with the £900 for that shed. It was a 110 which as a single cab just looks wrong to me! I'm going to sell my recently rebuilt Suzuki Bandit 600 plus some cash for the galv chassis. I've got a 300TDi disco to sell off too so that can go towards a bulkhead with a bit more cash.... Suspension for my birthday etc etc. Maybe on the road in spring next year but that will also be dependant on finding a cab roof, rear bulkhead etc to convert it. Hopefully the rear door will be at least as good as mine but with a heated window so I can fit that in my current car. There will be some stuff to sell off but I can't do that until after I get the cab stuff such as the roof, van panels and my rear door (which is find other than the heated window)

I'll be keeping both so having two that are different from each other would be important.

As I said earlier, I would give it a thorough going over before I even offered anything for it. Are the door bottoms on the way out? Is the rear floor got holes where it touches the floor supports? Are the seat box ends rotten? Are the seat belt mounts rotting through the front of the tub? Inner sills ok? The list goes on a bit and the costs quickly mount up. Depending on what standard you are aiming at.

Thing is with 're-conditioned' axles, they could be worth a lot, or very little. If they've used Timken bearings, decent grease, 'proper' seals and all done correctly, then it could be worth a bit ..

It could however be a naff refurb with, for instance, chinese bearings, polished stubs, cleaned up and painted any old grease and oil, etc.

I'd check stuff like that and price it on the parts you think you can use.

It's been done by a friend of mine who knows what he's doing. All decent quality stuff. He's even changed the discs and callipers although the rear axle isn't on the car at the moment! Will need attaching to move it....
