Whats in a name

User names tend to get made up on the spur of the moment with a pressing need of a broken Land Rover distracting you from the possibility you might still be stuck with it 7 years and 3 Land Rovers later.....

When CB radio was all the rage I had a mate who went to a meet but to gain entry he needed a handle, on the spur of the moment out it came.... Blue Peter.

His name was Jim.

oh well, least it was a serious name/handle.
I was BigE
or JetLag....
many never got JetLag so I said, dont worry, It`ll catch up on you later.....:)

at the time we were on AM, so changing to FM had to have different handles.

still got some AM rigs, theres even less on them than straight 40 UK or 40 EU
but I guess the side banders are banging out QDX`s

:D i was an apprentice when it was big and one of the other apprentices was really in to it ,unfortunately he had a bad stammer ,though it was highly amusing listening to him ,used to spend his dinner hour driving around to get better reception

hahahahaahahahaahaaaa....

oh the things we got up to - "back in the days"

it actually promoted the birth of pirate radio,
as now many years later, I was told the reason to get my kids dad to go to work (nights) earlier on weekends was to set up/uncover
the pirate radio station in a bedroom that faced a local tower block where the transmitter was (line of sight)
sky dish LNB`s were a feature on inter communicating between studio & transmiter......

*disclaimer*
all this alledgedly never took place......:D:D

^^^^ Love the last bit :)

We were kids and CB's were still kicking about. We took great fun in interrupting folks conversations using the handle "gayboy"

Im sure you can imagine the rest lol A few furious folk and a coupl eof odd alls that arranged meet ups but must have waited a very long time on the cold.

it was a period in our lives that filled the void before mobile phones.....

now, our mobile reception has got so bad, that i struggle on 3g and get almost nothing on 4g
my older now spare phone just goes on and on...
if i do a coverage check, we have a better reception a mile or two out to sea than we do on land, the reason is the "bay" created by the cost having better reception further round thus going out to sea.

as spoken of before, i have a wall mounted booster arial free from EE but that robs a bit of power from my bad internet supply...

good job my 40uk and 40eu rig is always in the car..............err, but no ones on it...lol

I used to know a keen CBer, and a friend was big into communications equipment - he had a home made working car phone!

The car phone transmitter and receiver were in the boot, and it communicated with his house, yes it used pulse dialing too!

Anyway to wind up the CBer (on FM) we used to use various things like "calling <his CB name>", or "Calling <his real name">, using his CB name face to face, we had lots of fun.
