What's happening to my Freelander?

:( Heartbroken 2001 Freelander owner needs a perk up.. .. . . . .

The scraping noise will be getting sorted next week after rigorous investigation !!! but the garage told me today that the exhaust downpipe can only be replaced as a complete unit, the prop shaft front joint cannot be replaced, it needs to be a whole unit and wait for it, all brake pipes need replacing. A bill of £2000 is awaiting me if I go ahead with this work so I'm asking all Freelander owners for their views - what would you do (let the garage do it or purchase the parts from the Landy magazines and try and find a friendly mechanic?)

Only had the landy 6 months and done 6000 miles, think the garage who sold it to me saw me coming eh?




Just found a great website - Paddock spares and accessories - anyone got any experience of ordering from them as the parts appear pretty cheap?
Buckley Brothers also have an interesting sight - any prefernces for on-line ordering anyone has would be gratefully received.

Sounds a bit of a rough do for you!
Second option,without a doubt,and a few things I dont like about service your getting,Ive never heard of any vehicle needing all the brake pipe changing,Mines the same year as yours,and no way do they need doing,they usually go at the ends of the pipes after a good few years ,but if thats the case i usually joint the pipe to replace the corrosion,unless its a short pipe then yep replace the whole pipe.
Paddocks are very good, Used them lots in the past,and yep there cheap, most things arnt genuine LR part,But lets face it the parts your replacing ARE and its only five year old ,so no problem there.

theres always the third option, get yer spanners out:D

Hi Highlandrover, yes I think the garage saw you coming, but put it down to experience, you won't be caught again. Now don't fret, there are plenty of places to get bits from which won't cost anything like what you've been quoted. Mondo is right I have used Paddocks for most of my bits, service is first class and if you aren't sure about what bit to order e-mail them and they will happily put you right.

PS. don't go back to the garage you have been using, try a local 4wd specialist if poss.
 
Hi matey fix it yerself or find a local land rover repairer paddock are good also try craddocks they are also good can't see how all brake pipes need replacing... I smell shanangans there...good luck regards cartman690...:)
 
Yep i agree with the others there is no way all that work needs doing on ya brakes unless ya bin dippin in salt water, get a nother opinion, sounds like a rip orft, send me the location and me and my Mrs will sort em out [put um outa business big time], don't like it when us Lr people get ripped, best oh luck. . . .:eek:
 
I agree too. Brake lines should not need replacing on a 5 year old car (Yeah, 5 years old Mondo, not 6 ;) ) Sounds like they're changing lots in the hope to stop the scraping noise. Not fare on you really.
Get a second opinion, that's the safest bet.
I wish you luck in getting this sorted.
 
Here here - I smell a rat. Using Tiny as the sites mega milage old girl example - she wades in salt water 4 times a year and never had any problems with the brake pipes in her 8th year. Get a second opinion on the work needed. There was a recall a few years back too on the handbrake and pipes chafing. Check this was carried out on yours in the back of your service book. If you need a campaign reference I can dig it out for you.
 
you a member of either RAC or AA? If so ask to speak to their legal dept and seek advise from them, they offer a fair bit of advise for free that they do not really advertise, they will also undertake vehicle inspections for you at a reasonable price - because they arent trying to sell you any further products (ie more mechanics) they are likely to be impartial

Good idea Outlander. Get an inspection carried out on the vehicle. From memory I think they're aorund £250 but this is a small price to pay if the vehicle doesn't need any work. If it does at least you know you weren't ripped off.
 
Hi Guys....
I suppose one thing could be said - I could sue the grit lorries in the winter for spreading too much salt as that's what the garage told me...Huh??? The Highland roads are bad for salt but as a loving LR owner I have faithfully washed my car after each treck to prevent this corrosion.
I am off to get a second opinion as the Inverness garage was not much cop. :eek: Pity we don't have more 4x4 centres up this way as I could certainly do with their help. Anyone of you boys fancy a holiday in the Scottish Highlands to mend my LR..!! :rolleyes:
Will let you now what the scraping noise verdict is and the result of the second opinion.

Sound to me like she went to the dealers in Inverness, going by the prices they charge, So if she lives in Inverness, there must be more than one garage.
But i would like to think she lives in the middle of nowhere, What i class as the Highlands,
Thats just because the could be a free holliday going to fix her hippo ;)

You're right, I live 50 miles North of Inverness in the Highland hills.:D

Ended up travelling 100 miles to get the car seen to. Brake pipes just needed a clean - NOT replacing............................. Propshaft & exhaust needed the whole units though.

One week later after having this fabulous work done, I couldn't start my Freebie after work. Tried again as it had worked perfectly well before now. Foun dout my Head Gasket had gone............. well, it's still in the garage getting checked - luckily for me, this work WILL be claimed under the warranty.

Is there anything else that's likely to go on my 51 plate Freebie in the next few months as I don't think I can take anymore :eek:

Yuz guys aint mentioned the exhaust and propshaft - I cant speak about exhaust, but I know I had to have the complete propshaft changed as a unit - is it the same with the exhaust - coz those two alone aint gonna be cheap!:eek:
