Should have a replacement engine coming for the one blown up by the doris.

What I'd like to know from all the knowledgable folk on here is which is the best way to do the swap over - engine and box or engine only?

The donor I've got has a rebuilt gearbox so ideally, I'd like to swap that over. Not essential as the box in my car has never caused me any trouble.

Cheers

Cheers Buster.

Are the boxes that weak it's an idea to keep them? I only really wanted the engine and was going to scrap the rest to re-coup some of my cash.

Why fook about changing gearboxes if there's nothing wrong with yours? Unless of course manhandling heavy lumps of metal in awkward places is your idea of a fun weekend:confused:

Well, there is a fun element to pulling apart and putting back together again but the idea to swap engine & box is that there would be less work to do. From searching the net, taking the engine off the box in the car seems like more work than just taking the lot out.

I just thought I'd ask the opinion of those who may have already done the job both ways.

as long as yer confident in both the new engine and GB - and yer happy the clutch isnt going to pop it's clogs i'd have the old GB and engine out in one go and straight in with the new

Cheers Sean. Just driven the donor home and everything feels good. The gearbox is a lot smoother than my old one.

Next question - what, if anything other than a service should be changed whilst the engine is out (thinking timing belt, P gasket, etc)

Thanks for the info

obviously you'll have the radiator out etc, so it's easier to change timing belt with tensioners and serpentine belt too. I just changed the engine in my 300tdi Disco (not box's). I also gave it a thorough service, adjusted tappets, changed all fluids and filters etc. Then changed all fluids and filters again after 500 miles. It's running really sweet now (except my water pump is squeeking a bit).
