I know rear fog lights have been around for donkeys years, but does anyone know what year they were made a legal requirement? My Defender (an '89) just failed MOT on just the foglight not working. Prob is in wiring loom so want to remove it to get the test n will repair proper wiring when I am overhauling in the summer. Will it pass with it removed? :(

Twas round about 1978

your '89 motor requires a rear high intensity lamp to be fitted to the offside of the vehicles rear(although they can be fitted centrally) the switch for this has to be illuminated when the lamp is on OR have a warning lamp fitted to the dash, if you really cant get it working get a universal 'fog lamp' and wire it in in place of the one that is fitted (with fresh wiring)

i assume you have done all the basic checks like the bulb isn't blown fuse is ok etc

Oh! Will stick a temp wire in then from the relay down to the connector in the boot. I think the guy that had it before me messed around with it when he fitted front spots. Wiring is ok at both ends tho so will just bypass that. Thanks again - saves a wasted visit to the MOT centre...
