What wires should come out the heater fan sliding swictch?

As per the title... heater fan ain't working, I've hooked it up directly to a battery and the fan/motor is fine but the thing just doesn't work using the normal slider switch.

I've looked behind the dash and there are two wires hooked up to the bottom of the slider, there is a bare terminal at the top though which looks like something needs to be connected to it - anyone tell me what should be on there?

The top connector should have an earth (black) wire connected to it - it might have fallen off and be sitting behind the dash

Thats why your fan doesn't work!

Time to get rooting around to see if I can find a black wire hidden in the jungle down there now :lol:

Yep it will be there mate
It will have a plastic terminal cover on it too - push it onto the bare terminal and test your fan

Been rooting around in there for the last half hour and there isn't a loose earth wire anywhere to be seen

Seems odd because one of the previous owners has done a rewire by the looks of it and made a fairly neat job of it... any idea where the earth wire should enter the dash?

If you can't find it - just put in onother 1: crimp a connector on to a piece of black wire to fit the bare terminal, behind the dash you will see the dash support with a bolt through it, undo the bolt - put the other end of the black wire (strip 1") in the gap between the bolt head and the support - tighten the bolt - try the fan

Will have a last look around after lunch to see if there's any sign of it, think I'll probably end up doing what you've suggested though.

has the fan worked since you've owner the defender?

have you been working on anything behind the dash?

when did you notice the fan didn't work?

Fan has never worked since I've owned it, only thing I've worked on behind the dash was fitting a new speedo cable - made sure not to tamper with anything else though.

It's just a job I've been meaning to get round to since I got the vehicle 6 months ago, I've just got off my arse to start doing something about it since winter's coming though :lol:

I'd always realised there was a wire missing, just needed someone to confirm whether it was a live/ground/whatever

Ok mate - its an easy fix hopefully that fixes the snag

Hi daz, maybe u could help with my problem. Had my 90 for a month. The left heater switch was missing. Just fitted new switch but there's no wires/connector behind dash same colour to to connect to?
Traced it from heater, thru bulkhead, along to centre then disappears down towards fusrbox but doesn't go to fusrbox by the look of it? HELP!
