what winch?

It depends what you want your winch for?

To sit there all shiney and nice and not use it?

Off road pay and play? Just incase or you trying winch challenge stuff?

I have a warn xd9000 in the back of mine, Albright copy solinoide and synthetic rope, it's been a good winch, fast for a low line winch,

I also have a warn 8274 with +3" thinner drum, bigger motor and synthetic rope, it's fast, and pulls hard,

If I was to build another off-roader I would consider a hydraulic winch. Would still have 1 electric tho incase the engibe dies.

I bought and refurbed a Warn M8000, ace winch, but one issue I have is keeping the oil/grease inside the gearbox. No issues with the quality of parts, the gears don't look worn at all, all the separate parts are damn good .. but there isn't a proper bearing or seal between the drum and motor or gears .. poor design that, I think.

Having said that, while it's old and needed a new motor, it does work well and hasn't really let me down other than the freespool handle gets a bit tricky 'cos the lube doesn't stay there!

Mind, I dunno if any other makes have proper bearing mounted drums and seals either ...

If its like the xd9000 it has a plastic bush / seal, I put some silicone gasket on the mating face and left it to set befor I built it up,

Ebay and no it had steel on it, just leave a heavy ish bit of cloth over it like half an old blanket

Well keep then out of the danger zone then, my lad is 6 but he knows when there are winches being used he must stay away, all I have to say to him is "go safe" and he is off out of the possible whip area and behind something solid incase shackles or hooks go flying. Better to teach them to get away than let them believe winch lines aren't dangerous, I treat every pull like it can kill me, and a few have tried, that way when it goes wrong you are ready.

Your right, obviously keep them out of the way, just that extra bit of piece of mind with synthetic.

As far as use - getting me out of the s@!t to start with in the local green lanes, but more later (very new to this) could of done with the winch with this one ( or maybe a long stick before I drove into it, I know should of checked)

Is there any where else that sells old warn winches other than eBay or gum tree? Having no luck close to home, or is just a waiting game?

I like the idea of hydrolics, also for quick tyre pressure change and diff lock - just way out of price range at the moment

I'm looking at a warn xd9000i that's not the youngest winch out there. Is there any faults to look for and has this winch changed much over the years? i.e the hourse power the motor produces. Tried google but could only find specs for the latest gear - thanks for any ideas

bide your time on fleabay and you can grab a decent warn that needs some TLC.

I snagged a XD9000i for 80 quid, spent another 200 on the refurb but it works a charm....

Refurb included new gear housing due to the clutch lever being busted off, that was the most expensive bit to be honest.

Looking at a xd9000i with 26626 code, looks like motor might be fubr! Can you shove a bow motor straight in and if so maybe a bow 2. Would it require more than a standard battery could manage? and would the original gears be fine with extra hp going through them? Cheers in advance

So long as the motor shaft suits the Warn drive adaptor you can use almost any motor on it.

A standard battery won't last long with any winch, but if you keep the engine running and have a good alternator then it's OK .. it's how I have to run mine!

Definitely. Warn gearsets are probably unburstable without doing something stupid ..

As for the motor being fubar, they're quite easy to strip and replace brushes. So long as the armature has enough meat left on it, and the field coils are still sound and insulated then it can still work well .. if you do change it for a new one, post the old one to me !!!!

Thanks Paul, the one I'm looking at has a hole in the motor casing which I can't google a replacement for as of yet. Also like the idea of a bow 2 attached to the side . If i do buy it ( for the right price of course!) and replace the motor I'll keep you in mind for the old one.

Deffo have a crack at refurbing the motor, save you a load of cash. Mine was in shocking state when I bought it, but with some patience fettling it and a new bearing it's running fine now. It's quite surprising how well they will clean up.

When you cleaned yours up, did you come across a motor housing when you replaced your gear housing?
I might give Devon 4x4 a shout when normal working hours resume? Keeping finding stuff on American sites - damn those guys get it cheap! If it wasn't for postage and what ever the government take I would start importing!!

No they are like rocking horse poo in uk, they just want to sell you entire motors

I had to source one myself, from USA via Amazon, when I refurbed my winch .. pain in the ass, but got a genuine Warn motor endplate for £44 delivered!! Everyone else was offering them at £180 upwards ish .. and 14 weeks delivery ... mine came within five days ..

Got my winch warn 9.5 xp - just arrived. Second hand so thought I'd check it over and saw a bit of silicone by the motor gasket. Later found out (hang head in shame) this is used to block off one of the water vents. Now can't get the casing on because bush's have sprung in the way. Does anyone know if you can remove the aluminum cooling section, mine isn't budging. Thanks for any ideas
