What type of tank for LPG?

Hi All,

I'm getting quotes for a Prins LPG conversion.

The first one mentions a toroidal tank, but I've heard that there is also an option to fit tanks alongside the chassis rails.

Anybody heard of this?

Is it a good idea?

My Classic had underslung tanks...but on the P38 there is not much room under there due to the spare wheel well (Classic spare was mounted on the side in the boot - P38 sunk into floor!)

That is not to say impossible but from what I can remember whilst being under the P38 there isn't much space!

Underslung tanks on the P38 might be quite a small volume, our P38 has the donut tank in the sp.wheel well and gives 82lts of useable gas which equates to 250 or so miles. If an Underslung tank can be fitted it might only give you 35-40 litres. This would also probably be a single hole tank, so your tank level guage could end up out of sight as they're set at around 10o'clock.

both our P38s have the tank in the spare wheel well. the spare usually sits in the boot space with a fitted vinyl spare wheel cover over it.

Underslung tanks on the P38 are limited due to the space. There are installers that replace the main fuel tank with a singnificantly reduced sized fuel tank to allow for an underslung tank, however, you're now into a larger cost area, and that comes with downsides too.

make sure you go for a multi point system.

The underslung tanks on my Classic gave me about 130 miles, which meant careful planning if I was not to have to run on petrol - and even then I had to sometimes, as the number of garages seems to be in slow decline.

On the other hand, I bought a big car in order to have a big load space, so boot tanks were simply not an option.

When looking at the space under the P38, don't forget that it will (should) rise when moving. Ask your fitter if he can refer you to somebody locally with the system to look at and get an opinion.

You need to be filling with at least 60 litres (80 litre tank as they only 3/4 fill)
That should see 180 miles on a 4.6.
It does become a bore filling them, it takes a while compared to petrol and each filling station seems to have a different flow rate at the pump. Make sure they give you the biggest bore fill pipe allowable to save you time at the pump. The code of practice keeps changing. I've seen 8mm minibore through to 19mm hogger. Think about where you want the filler. Tow bar is best but again I think cop changed on that. If they are going to drill body for filler, it will corrode if they don't coat it. Take some before and after photos including boot floor etc as there are some cowboys out there. Seen one take a massive hole saw to a boot floor to save dropping a tank back out.

A decent sized tank on a trailer would sort it, should be able to get a couple of thousand miles between refills assuming the car will run for that long between breakdowns

What takes the time when filling with LPG is.....

... some dip**** blocking the LPG pump while they go do their weekly shop.... wait for a coffee.... do a couple of scratchcards...

... then saunter back to their car taking time to put stuff in their car and arrange it.. find their keys start up.. oh no .. need to find something in the boot, no not there... get back in the car.. start it again.. find the headlights... oops not that.. that's the wipers.. seatbelt.. check....

... then pull away from the pump.


the amount times i've felt like ramming people out of the way i cannot count.

You haven't mentioned the garages with cash machines. They park on a pump, use the machine then drive off !!!! B*STARDS

I have 2 tanks a 45ltr and 90ltr underslung with no loss of boot space and retaining the original petrol tank on my p38.
