What to put on a cleaned chassis?

Hello, just joined the forum.

In August I bought a 1983 110 hard top for £500 off a friend. It's languished a bit on his drive but passed its MOT last week with no more than a dodgy bulb, which I was chuffed about.

I've started stripping the loose rust and old underseal off the chassis, or those parts I can get to, and have treated the cleaned areas with a rust treatment (the green stuff by UKlandrover that turns the red oxide to a black oxide). It all seems very solid, although there is one small hole right at the back end, close to where the rear crossmember attaches.

It's a long time since I worked on any vehicle like this (last time was on a 1976 Hillman Imp), so before I start slathering on the black gunge, I wanted to ask: what is the preferred coating for chassis and underbody these days? Do people still use black underseal, or is there better stuff?

Also, is it a DIY-able job to spray Waxoyl into the chassis via the various little holes along its length? Again, It's been a long time, so I'm a little rusty.

Hi. Smart looking car, I like the colour.

If you do a search there have been quite a few threads on this lately. My preference is dinitrol chassis wax which you can spray on with an aerosol. I think it was 4941.

Wow that looks good. Sounds easier to use than waxoyl and stonechip too.
Do you need a special sprayer?

I used aerosol cans, but I think it is cheaper if you use a compressor and spray gun.

Dinitrol in my opinion is better than waxoyl (plus not as messy), and it also stops rust better than stonechip would.

wurth cavity wax for me ,,sprays on like wd40 seeps into everywhere and becomes wax ,,,,great stuff,,,,,

You could also use old engine oil as it is free, you will have lots of it and it lasts better than Hammerite. I use the stuff out of my motorbikes rather than the Diesel engine oil as it doesn't smell. Works well for me and sprays well inside the chassis

+1 for Dinitrol from me too. I haven't used Wurth. Having said that, Dinitrol is thin too and you can see it penetrating joints etc via capilliary action. Dries to a great wax.

Dinitrol is what I've used. Bought a huge kit with tons of containers and a sprayer. I bought cavity spray and wax. Only managed to do the cavity stuff. So far very pleased.

And one heads up on the old engine oil - use it if you want to - but used engine oil turns acidic (plenty of info on the Interwebnets).
