I live in Ireland and no longer know what the cost of an MOT is. Have you considered asking the vendors if they are happy to take it for a test? That way, if it's the same as Ireland, you will get a detailed report on failure or recommend repairs. Even if it costs a hundred quid it would be cheaper than buying "blind".

If you can make your mind up on model and year (not easy when shopping around) you can research what individual items should be present and things that shouldnt be there. If you have five grand then get a list of available heaps at five grand. in theory they should be pretty similar in age and speck so concentrate on this age for handy info. If one pops up ten years younger with half the mileage chances are its not what it seems.
Once youve got the model, age and speck read as much as you can on it and look out for any differences and ask away. if they dont know they may have been had when they got it. If there is a plausible explanation it may be ok. Other than that take someone along that knows.

Oh,

May not be worth saying, But if it has a brand new MOT........Or is offered with a new 12 Month MOT, then treat it with some suspicion......Plenty of people can get MOT's from dubious places.

Cheers

Congrats,
