What to look for

Hi All,
I am thinking of changing from my 1998 Tdi Discovery to a Freelander Td4 can any one give me ant tips on what to look for regarding faults etc.
I am having to change my car due to redundancy from Peugeot and the fact that I will have to travel further to my new place of work but I still need it to tow my caravan which weighs 1500kg.

You're giving us the wrong type of information to get a sensible answer from us. We don't need to know if you work or not or what car you're getting rid of. Useful information would be things like:

What age TD4 are you looking at buying?

What colour is the caravan?

Look forward to some more information

Ya cannot go wrong with the td4,have never towed but have heard its a good motor for that, and as the Mark say's a tad more info, and just what colour is yer caravan. . .

If you require more info here it is, 2 to 3 years old Freelander Req, what is the fuel economy like and how well do they tow, it also must have 5 doors.

Get a TD4 station wagon. I hear they can do between 30 and 40 mpg on a good day. The TD4 also has plenty of torque which is good for towing. The 1.8 litre petrol tends to be a bit gutless, has trouble with it's own weight let alone adding a caravan
The Station Wagon is also huge inside. 3 adults can sit in the back very comfortably.

Sorry to hear about whats happened at Peugeot - just down the road from there myself and I the Longbridge thing is a very recent memory - I hope you can get sorted with something sooner rather than later matey!

Mark states between 30 & 40 mpg from a TD4 - I have just bought a new 3dr and the figure I am getting is far closer to 30 than 40 mpg truth be known, I dont know whether this is what I should be expecting but it seems a little on the thirsty side!!

yes, but don't forget the Freelander is not in the Bantam weight category plus the constant 4wd next to it makes the engine has 'some' work to do to keep the car moving, and it's the same as with old farmhorses in the past, those horses that needed to work hard got the best (most) food.

Outlander, do you have an auto or manual gearbox? Autos tend to be more thirsty. Being as you've got a TD4 I think it's safe to assume your figures are more acurate than mine. I think Ming mentioned he gets around 30 mpg but I'm pretty sure I saw a post some where stating 40 mpg was achievable. Could be wrong!

Thanks for the replies with regards to the color of the caravan it is white 24ft long and 7 ft wide end bath room with shower cubical 4 berth and as I have stated before the max weight is 1500kg I could go on for ever about the caravan but I wont bore you anymore.

You don't have much choice with caravans

Having just got back from Gaydon, I'm seriosuly thinking about gettinga caravan, after the airbed in our tent deflated at 0200.

Grrrr.

I have towed a variety of trailers/vans with our TD4. The max towing wheight of the Freelander is 1500kgs, so you will need to be careful with loading your caravan. Manual was fine, but you might consider an auto if you have a lot of loaded, towing hill starts to content with. That said, I much prefer towing with a manual.

1500kg?? In my handbook (TD4 Auto 2001) it says max towing weight is 2000kg! It better be - I need to tow with it (no not a caravan!!)

My mate has a TD4 which tows a 980kg horse box complete with about 1000kgs of horse with no problem So I imagine the 2000kgs is more like it......

im just back from the lakes with my 51 td4 my caravan has a mtplm of 1250 kg and the td4 plays with it lots of low down grunt hill starts no problem etc. etc. the only problem you may have is you may be very near to a 100% match with your van iv done it in the past its ok if you are sensible about it, i get about 30-35 from the td4 more on a run,i had a rav 4 for towing before this and the td4 is 100 times more up to the job hope this helps

Quite right, Stringy, the figure I should have stated was 1,800kg.

You can go up to 2,000kg but if you have a well loaded Freelander, you could exceed the train weight.
