hi, I have the opportunity to buy a local SWB 1960 series 2 on a galvanised wig chassis, with galvanised bulkhead 2.25 petrol. MOTD and running. I've only seen pics so far and it looks like it's going to need a fair bit of work to tidy it up. The current owner is looking for 4.5k which looking at prices generally seems fair but like I say haven't seen or heard it in the flesh yet. I'm only familiar with never models is there anything I should pay particular attention to when checking it out....? Does that price sound fair ?

With a galvanised chassis and bulkhead, there isn't really much else to worry about except maybe the front centre panel which may have rusted out at the bottom.
Engines are simple to work on and parts are cheap so no major worries there.
Check gearboxes work as they should and don't jump out of gear ( no synchro on first or second unless it's a series 3 box)
Brakes should pull up straight but expect to put a lot of effort in!!
Sounds a sensible price and if you look after it it'll only go up in value....

The front centre panel that the headlights goes through looks rusted out from the bottom ! I priced these about 250 quid. Is this a difficult fix ? I'm pretty handy, can weld , rivet etc

Yes I can , but I'm looking at an image of the plate online and with the edging and protrusions I don't have access to the tools for this so I'd likely buy a front plate.

Had a look , as you say no synchro on 1st or 2nd and brakes a lot of effort. There were a few issues with it I wasn't sure about. One of the things was the play in the steering like a boat, seller reckoned that was as it should be ! I don't expect modern car drive ability but is a lot of play just a feature ?? As the seller reckoned.
That's an important structural component. It provides the connection and rigidity with the bulkhead and the front wings. They are available for S3's but not sure about S2a's. Not hugely expensive but important including visual.

They do have more steering play than a modern car but it shouldn't be excessive. If you imagine a mark at twelve o clock on the steering wheel, it shouldn't have more than about an inch of play to either side. The play can be adjusted easily enough provided all of the steering components, ball joints etc, are in good nick

Steering can be sorted - they take a while to get used to and constantly need input / correction compared to any modern car. Front panels can be fixed and I've see galvanised ones available too at autojumbles and specialists. At the price you're looking at I wouldn't let it pass by! You'll get your money back

as for the rad panel, just cut the bottom out and weld in a L piece or similar and for the steering they can wonder but not too hard but you will get used to it, but the asking price could be a bit high cause just because it has a gal chassis and bulkhead dont mean it has other major issues, i.e mechanical, its seems strange for him to be selling it as usually people stick to them and only sell if there are costly issues and or have no interest in it.
i have heard stories of someone getting one that had galved parts and had a lot of issues with other stuff.

Can you take it for a test drive? If so, find a hill and see how it goes up it, all old landies struggle with hills if they have their original engines but they do get up. Look for lots of exhaust smoke and any untoward noises. Series 2 are going up in value so it's unlikely you will loose money on it. Shame it's not a year older, then it would be mot exempt.
