check everything you would check on a normal car, - all electrics especially windows on a freelander 1, engine oil for gunk and signs of coolant in it etc.
On a freelander 1 if the rear tyres are worn wavey or saw-toothed then the vcu is knackered and possibly the ird may be worn a tad. Check the boot cubby box for signs of wettness which could means the tail gate window seal is perished. Check for play in the vcu support bearings.
