Any recommendations gratefully received!
Have just bought a Disco TDI on 'N' plate with (I think) HG failure - heaters don't work, attempted to remove any air locks by blowing water from the coolant tank through to the thermostat, ran the engine and cold water flowed out the coolant tank.
Anyway, I'm thinking this motor will be a keeper so want to do a good job under the bonnet and hopfully it will look after me. Along with removing the head and getting it skimmed and pressure tested (or if cracked, getting a new one) I would like to know what else it will be worth looking at changing. Are there any specific problems with this era of disco I should be watching out for? I'm thinking water pump, thermostat, belts?, tensioners?, glow plugs, oil filter, air filter. Afterall I know nothing on the history of this motor.
As I understand all the above should be fairly straight forward jobs, well compared to working on my Alfa! And from what I've seen on the web you don't even need to touch the timing belt when removing the cylinder head?!! My knowledge of cars lies with multi overhead cam types so I can't get my head around that one..
Oh, and I lifted the carpet under the rear seats to find some quite bad rust along the width under the seat - is is possible to drill out the panel and buy a new one?
Please excuse the thousand and one questions but I wanted to try and keep everything on one thread :) :)

Alright gR@HAM and welcome. Yeah, a lot of questions there but if you do a search one by one on 'ere then you'll find out what you need to know.
I've found the advise and help brilliant in the short time I've been it. :)

Firstly changing the head gasket was easy, which i found strange too. but she's working fine and pulling a lot better.
The tensioners seem wanting attention from experance and from other threads on here and loads of tricks you can try for sweeky belts etc
and if you can weld the seats shouldn't be a problem....

Cheers Discobill, Heggars.
Believe it or not I've spent most evenings this week looking through the technical section!
Oh and another thing, but this time not a question.. I can't belieeeve how cheap parts are for a landy - timing belt £10, HG £10, water pump £20, thermostat £5, tensioner £17!!!
