I don't own a Land Rover but would very much like to. I've loved them for ages, and now that I've gone freelance I think I have the time to enjoy one. GF says yes (if she gets a puppy), so I'm shopping! :):)

Anyway, I don't know much about auto mechanics and I'd really, really like to learn more. Best way to do this is 'on the job' with my own vehicle I would think? I want to buy a 110 (for the space) probably a hardtop (for the security) and I don't mind if it's not super-powerful (but just a little oomph would be nice). Budget is about £4-5k at the moment, but I reckon she'll let me spend a bit more when she sees the shinier ones.

That's as far as I've got so far, and I wondered if you 'orrible lot might like to make some suggestions as to what to look for and what to avoid? I think I know some of the basics re avoiding ringers, obvious places to check for rust etc, so I guess my first/main question would be: what are the better engines to go for?

All help much appreciated!

If you're looking to work on it yourself - 200 or 300 TDi

Budget puts you in the 1988 - 1995 year range

Hard top won't give you security - sorry, locks are not great! You'll need to be thinking immobiliser, disklock as minimum (about £230 spend) and ideally clutch claw as well (another £100)

Decide whether you want county spec (loads of seats), double cab (less about) or just 3 seats up front - can always add side benches later.

This guide will help with the pitfalls - condition matters far more than mileage or paintwork

Finally you'll have to make good on the puppy promise to keep the GF amused - you'll be under the Landy most weekends:D
