I don't own a Land Rover but would very much like to. I've loved them for ages, and now that I've gone freelance I think I have the time to enjoy one. GF says yes (if she gets a puppy), so I'm shopping!

Anyway, I don't know much about auto mechanics and I'd really, really like to learn more. Best way to do this is 'on the job' with my own vehicle I would think? I want to buy a 110 (for the space) probably a hardtop (for the security) and I don't mind if it's not super-powerful (but just a little oomph would be nice). Budget is about £4-5k at the moment, but I reckon she'll let me spend a bit more when she sees the shinier ones.
That's as far as I've got so far, and I wondered if you 'orrible lot might like to make some suggestions as to what to look for and what to avoid? I think I know some of the basics re avoiding ringers, obvious places to check for rust etc, so I guess my first/main question would be: what are the better engines to go for?
All help much appreciated!
