found this broken pipe on the top of my gearbox whats it for and is it important. the view is from where the middle seat would be

that looks like its been cut. you can see both ends in the photo! looks plastic and looks like the transferbox breather pipe. If you put that top bit you should see the same thing moving in the engine bay near to or attached to the bulkhead.

It's made of rubber. Thought it was a breather as well but thought I better check on here. Will trace the other end tomorrow once the hangover clears. Cheers lads
 
Its defo the transfer box breather pipe , it should end in a hook/curve behind your cylinder head , but like the other guys have said its been cut . either buy a new one or use a quick fit pipe connector to join then back together again , think someone befor had the box out and couldnt be bother to undo the union !!!! .

Its is a transfer case breather but it does not end up behind the cylinder head unlike diffs breathers and gearbox breather.

It is connected on the side of the transfer case lever with a similar banjo bolt which is not visible in the picture.

I had my gearbox and transfer box removed for a clutch kit two days back so I had a very good look at it!
