i've got a series 3 lightweight with a 2.5 petrol out of a 90 i put a 4 core rad in a few months ago with an 88 degree thermostat and its was almost always in the red regardless of drivin enviroment. so i currently run without a thermostat and have noticed that around town the water temp gauge reads at just abouve normal but when drivin on motorways or dual carriageways it runs almost totally in the cold area any suggestions on what to do would be very gratefully received

It is likely to run colder without a thermostat because the water will be flowing round permanently, rather than when it gets up to the thermostats temperature - but you have probably figured that out! You can get cooler running thermostats (I think 74), might be worth having a go.

My Series 2A 2.25 petrol is a bit wacko - when the temperature gauge is in the red it means it is starting to get warm - at this point you can still put your hand on the radiator quite comfortably!
