Does the temp keep rising past 100 or do you turn it off?
Header cap on or off when you testing?

(Our classics goes over 100 & then cools real quick. If they get to 110 we turn them off)

sorry for more questions but we are all trying to help

All the help is most appreciated, believe me I am going mad with this one.

The hottest I have had it is 105 using the IR temp gauge then I have turned it off, always tested with the header cap on.

So it gets to 105 does it keep climbing?
Just up the tick over a bit so it’s flowing a bit more water through the rad.

(If under pressure the boiling point is higher)
My disco engine will get hot just sat still, I do run electric fan but temps drop back down to 92*

I'm so sad, I was thinking about this the other night: The cooling system was working OK before the engine rebuild. That suggests that something happened during the rebuild to make the engine run hot. Just an idea - it is possible to block the cooling flow to the head with a gasket that doesn't have the right holes.

That's a good idea! Not thought of that.
But...
That would suggest hot coolant not getting to the radiator in the first place so no opportunity to lose heat to the atmosphere. I'd expect a cold radiator in that scenario, not a hot one
Maybe...

The head gasket is a 3 hole Elring one and looked spot on when fitted. The water seems to be flowing around the system fine. It is booked I for an MOT next Saturday so should be able to give it a proper run providing it passes.

We will sort this one way or another, thank you all for your help and advice

Did you get it for an MOT? How did it run? Is it still very hot?

It passed the MOT :)

I will be honest and due to life rushing by me at the moment I haven't had chance to give it a really good run, so far it hasn't overheated. I am off this week so am planning on giving it a good run and I will see from there.

Thank you for asking :D
