What switch am I missing?

Hi there,

I bought my first Freelander today, a 1.8 petrol xei and I have a few questions.

Firstly I noticed that I appear to be missing a switch on the dashboard, it is on the right of the steering wheel underneath the rear windscreen wiper switch, the green light is there but no switch. Can anyone tell me what this switch controls (as I can still press it in to use it) and the best place for me to source a replacement for it?

Secondly, the car only came with one remote control fob, which the buttons are very worn, can you buy a replacement case (outer) for this as the insides are fine and are new fobs expensive to buy as I need to get one for the wife.

Many thanks for your help.

Lee

Unfortunately the car didn't come with a handbook and the owners manual site seems to be down :(

With regards to the key fobs, you can buy these quite cheaply on Ebay but they need re-programming to your particular vehicle unless you buy them with the matching ECU, in which case you need to take it along to a dealer to do it, probably for some exhorbitant sum.

Thanks for the reply, I managed to get everything sorted today. Got a new key fob housing and rear wiper switch for £3 each from main dealer.

Sourced a used key fob on ebay for £7 and LR dealer quoted me £30 to programme it, if it is a bit tatty I will just pick up a new housing for £3, cheap as chips!

Just have to figure out why my central locking only unlocks the front passenger and tailgate door yet will lock all now :D

£30 ? Ouch! Bit steep for something that probably takes 5 minutes to do. Ah well.

As regards unlocking, if you press mine once it unlocks the drivers door. Press it again and it unlocks the other doors. Press and hold and the rear window comes down. Hope that helps.

I wish it was so, for me it is:

Press once and nothing happens.
Press a second time and front passenger door & tailgate door unlock.
Press and hold and rear screen comes down (that does work).

If I use the the central locking switch on the dash, again it will only unlock the front passenger and tailgate doors, the rear doors and driver remain locked. However if I unlock the doors manually the keyfob and central locking switch will lock them, the problem is the unlocking.

Aware of the HGF as I bought the car from my sister who has had 2 new engines since she bought it, the last of which was fitted 23k miles ago.

Infact I was going through the receipts earlier and she spent £9,000 on buying the car and another £6,000 on repairs.

I have heard that the HG's normally go around 30k, so I will be checking levels regularly and hopefully can catch the HGF before any real damage is done and can then get it replaced with the new ML head casket kit and ladder.

Thats the plan anyways :D

Duff actuators sounds very feasable, as the drivers door does try to unlock but the button doesn't make it fully up, it stops halfway.

I will have to give the dealer a ring tomorrow, to cost new ones.

it is almost certainly a problem with the drivers door lock as the rest of the system is behaving exactly as it should, get the door card off and have a look around, maybe some wd40 on the linkages might help

Ambriel - Have you replaced the solenoid with Maplins part no YD78K (5 wire component)

Are the wires the same colour codes?

Top link by the way, and cheaper than SPAL connectors

The 5-wire motor is for the driver's door lock, I think. The 2-wire motors are for the other doors and tailgate.

Going from memory the colours were different but easy enough to match up to the wiring diagram in the Haynes 'Book of Lies'.

I'm afraid I'm a bit vague as I don't have the Disco any more.
