What size tyres will go on....mods listed...

alreyt everyone,

Just wondered what tyre options I had with what my Disco has had done upto now...

Im wanting something wider and slightly chunkier for what i want to do but unsure if they will go straigh ton or will need a fair bit of messing around...also if they will go on the rims I have...

It has..

sports suspension, 3inch on the back 2 inch on front brit parts springs and shocks.

They are stock Disco wheels as far as i know, 16" but not sure how wide a tyre its safe to fit on.....would I need a wider rim?

Any help appreciated, Ive read the sticky but unfortunately im a new un to all this and don't understand a lot of the lingo yet, just want to do a bit of off-roading and occaisonal towing of my track car to events.

I have read that!

But it doesn't say if its ok to pop a 275 tyre onto a stock rim does it, and to search for that specific info isn't the easiest anyway, Im not new to forums tbh so I expect certain types that refer to stcikies all the time, instead of a simple answer...it probably took you as long to type your reply as it would have to just say...

you'd need to do a + b and yes it will fit on those rims.

And that get's you today's prize for the stroppiest noob:D, what tyres were you thinking of fitting 275/70/16's? I reckon you could follow what it says regarding the 285's on the "sticky".

Out of curiosity, why so wide?

I suppose im after something around 255...or what IYO would be good for a cross of off-roader and a bit of road use that includes motorway/towing miles....Im assuming the wider and bigger they are, the more horrible they are to drive on? Or am I way off :)


Im assuming any big tyres are going to possibly need the rear arches trimming and maybe the front bumper modding a bit....? I was just a bit unsure how "useful" the mods were I already had...ie; because it is already lifted, I wouldn't have the need to do that etc?

Ive just put kingpin mt 205/16's on there great on the road and only slightly bigger than the 235/70/16 they replaced and i got 5 tyres for £170 fitted, Im yet to see how they are on the wet n muddy stuff.
 
i had 285/75-16 bfgs on my old 300tdi,on 7x16 steel rims,had a 2"lift,had to cut back front bumper and side plastic sills,also cut the hell out the back arch,then had to put plastic arches on to hide chopping and cover some of the tyre,looked cool never really offroaded it think it probably would had caught the arch on articulation,and rubbed on turn circle,but couldnt be arsed adjusting steering stops,my wife hated it cause she struggled to get in it with her short legs..but then that was maybe a good thing..

Your 3" & 2" lift will no doubt be beneficial to fitting larger tyres, but what about towing, could cause issue's...

Personally I'd go no bigger than 245's, better to have a larger side wall to improve ground clearance if your going to green lane /off-road it.

Dewin, thanks bud, what I was looking for, would the height already there cut down on the need for cutting/trimming bumpers etc on that size tyre? maybe 245/75/16's?

Id thought about the towing issue too, maybe a drop needed on the towbar to sort that.

Not used that size personally .. Yet! (I will on my next set of tyre's)... but with a 3" lift on the rear I can't see too much of a problem at all. Personally I'd fit extended bump stops, but I do err on the side of caution. Any extra width imho is a waste unless you're going to traverse some serious mud condition's.
 
How do Jim lad :)

If you have any issues towing you can get hold of height adjustable towball brackets.

I have one on the Rangie but these can prove to be an anchor when offroad.

This for pulling the Evo round then fella?

Hiya Jon, yeah it is mate, i was going to ring you later btw :)

Probably needed for twoing maybe 10-12 times next year or so, so not too regular.

Hello mate, I didnt go metric: 31 x 12.5 inch Pro Comp mud tyres on 15 x 10 deep dish rims. 31inch are the largest height you can go without significantly effecting speedo reading, also any higher I personally think would be OTT unless you're offroading.
12.5 inch wide is by far the widest tyres you can get (wanted a wide stance) without needing larger than 31s. However, unfortunately I only managed to get 4 of these as they are very hard to source in the UK. My spare is a 31 x 11.5 but it has fairly wide tread and fits the rims okay. I much preferred the deep recess in the steel rims, got them from john craddock for (as I recall) £30 odd each.
These tyres are on fine with no lift, didn't want to mess with suspension as am looking to tow track cars to/from the race, boats etc.
However, the tyres are VERY wide so I needed to fit +3inch abs arches (eBay) and cut front/rear wings and rear door.
Have taken a shed load of pictures (1000+!) with the intention of eventually doing a write up, let me know if you're looking to do some chopping and I can run through what I did.
