Ok, new to the freelander and to be honest it doesn't have many problems really! touch wood...... I think I've doomed it now!

Anyway, off work so have time to have a look over it. I'm no mechanic but I'll give most things a go. Is there anything I should be looking at for a preemptive strike! Not sure if there are any preparations I can make to avoid a disaster in the near future!

'98 1.8 XEI 5 door. I would like to keep it on the road so your help would be appreciated!

Oh no! Not again, here we go with all the usual tales of woe from all the usual posters.

Thought it might happen. Just looking for an idiots guide to basic maintenance I suppose.

Grease this and that, prod that with a screwdriver, check for this here and that there!

You know the score. Just trying to be proactive and use others experience to my advantage!

gotta keep yu youngsters on ya toes!:D

I thought i would let yu give him an unbiased and honest answer.:p

interested to see what you say:rolleyes:

I will try. Scottish Stew first study the archives on Head Gasket Failure (HGF) as it is rampant on 1.8 engines. If you are still interested in one make sure it has a reasonable history and, if the car is in good condition, make sure you get it at the enormous discount that Freelander HGF history warrants. After purchase you want £2k in the bank ready for HGF repair with the right parts by a competent mechanic familiar with Freelanders and for some other failures that will occur soon after ownership. Also read up about viscous coupling failure and how to look out for it when you have a test drive.
In the meantime do the lottery and with any winnings go for JBQ. (Japanese Build Quality) . E & OE.

2k for a hgf, what are the parts made from gold? Can and have done this for less than a quarter of that price, using the new gasket kit, and new timing belt and tensioner included in the money. And have covered 17000 miles (harsh ones) since without a problem.

I must congratulate you on, hopefully, a successful repair. Unfortunately I do not believe the average Freelander owner to be as competent and knowledgeable as yourself.
Our typical owner while driving, is likely to be either conversing with his date for tonight on his mobile or immersed in some peculiar music from his hi-fi, I do not believe he is thinking about stretch bolt technology and anxiously watching his temperature gauge. If, by some chance, he does notice its rise he will probably be reluctant to leave his heated seat and will carry on to his destination without stopping.
Probably before then his gasping for water engine will decide enough is enough and pass away. The HGF will not now result in an HG repair but could mean a new /replacement engine. I am, unfortunately, a pessimist, hence my £2k figure.
Good luck with your next 17k.

in answer to your Q - there isnt much - the usual, check oil, check water.
every now an again check washer bottle, windscren wipers, check water, check oil.Take to dealer for diagnostic test, depart £90 lighter. check water, check oil, check vcu, check tyre wear, check oil, check water.

carry on saving...
