what should i be looking for??

hi i came across your forum on ad tra***. i found it very interesting and the members are very help full from what i have read.

im looking to buy a used free lander, hopefully the face lift type, there for was woundering if you can give me some tips on what to look out for when buying,
it has got to be a five door model for the germany shepard (no not the misses) i would be very gratefull for any tips.

best advice is don't do it. You'll regret it for as long as you own it.. get a proper 4x4 like a Disco or defender..

The 5 door has a small boot.

Don' t buy a petrol. On the face lift model that leaves the td4. It is a diesel engine made by BMW.
Test drive it and take it to a carpark or area of flat ground and drive it on full lock in circles. Listen for clicking noises. If it clicks then walk away.
Try and start it from cold to see how easily it starts.
Check the coolant, freelanders are prone to leaks.
Test absolutely everything electrical.
Make sure all of the tyres are the same, if the rear tyres are worn in a wavey pattern and not smooth then walk away.

Yes, get a Disco. They never go wrong and if they do LandRover fix them for free at whatever age. Drive a bit like tractors but dont let that worry you :doh: But seriously, any LR will cost more to maintain than say a nice Golf or some such, so only buy one if you can afford to run it!

Read the freelander faults poll sticky at the top of the page for the common mechanical issues.

Check for signs of corrosion where the rear door seals contact the wheel arch and corrosion/blistering under the rubber trim around window apertures.
Wet boot carpet from leaking door seal is very common.

Forget the Disco unless you plan some serious offroading. The Td4 is a nice drive on road & is a strong reliable economical unit with timing chain & is easily tuned with an egr bypass & Roverron chip/box for around £250. Do a search for VCU, IRD, crankcase breather, MAF . Most of the problems are on the forum & can be solved or avoided with care & attention and there are plenty of decent Freelanderers on here like Ming, Optimus Prime, The Mad Hat Man, Chaser, Howardo, Hippo to name a few who will help with good info whenever required. Then unfortunately there's your wasters who help no-one but they're easy to spot. Good luck & let us know when you get sorted.
