What should a set of used 5.5" Steel wheels cost?

I had a look at some completed listings on ebay and prices seem to vary wildly.

I saw some sets of 5 rusty looking standard 5.5" wheels that had sold for about £60 a set. The was also a set where the winning bid was £1 (not a mistake - one pound). All of these were the old riveted tubed type. All were without tyres.

I once sold a set for £10 at a small auto jumble show as I didn't want to take them home again.

Am I missing something? Why do the prices seem to vary so much?

Not sure, to be honest. I guess they are just the kind of thing that people have sitting around because they have fitted aftermarket wheels, or got new standard.

Just at random off Google, you might get much cheaper if you shopped around, new standard wheels for a Series, 60 quid a pop.
Bearing in mind that these are brand new, rust and buckle free, and that wheels are safety critical, I wouldn't be looking to pay much for second hand, unless they could be viewed, and were in very good condition.

I think there are quite a lot around so there's little competition for the 5.5s. If you look at the wider rims its a different story. Also they are heavy so they are often collection only so bidders tend to be local. I've sold wheels and tyres for £10 and recently bought a wheel with a nearly new 235/85 BFG for £30, again collection only. The set I'm currently running were £90 (for 4) with the tyres. 5.5s get taken off for Wolfs or modulars so there's always a supply.

supply and demand you can get several bidding on an item they want on that time slot and the price rises till the competition gives up ,then there's the rivet counter
brigade where the wheel has to have a date and part stamp with the usual patina(rust and worn paint ) who will pay stupid money if you say it's from a series 1
Land Rover such a case when someone on e-bay was selling a VW petrol can that was shaped to fit in the spare wheel as a series 1 part at series one prices
and I bet some punter believed it to be true and bought it .
I have just replaced my wheels and tyres for modern tubeless so have a set of five 1957 231601 wheels and tyres IF ANY RIVET COUNTERS ARE WATCHING

I got four steel defender wheels and tyres to replace the huge daft things on my series when I first bought it. Lots of tread on the tyres. I bid on a few but the ones I ended up with cost me £50. I have seen similar ones go for £250. Just look around for a bargain.

Auctions have a strange effect on people. You could get brand new for less than £250!

Agree re silly prices. I'm looking for a set of Wolf wheels as I want to convert to front discs at some stage and the Wolfs are needed to clear the calipers. New are around for £45 a wheel, last week 4 with quite old tyres went for £350. A few weeks before one wheel and tyre was unsold at £25 but it was "up North". The theory of valueing at auctions is that the true value is the loosing bid as this is the amount 2 people are prepared to pay but this seems to vary a lot for Land Rover wheels.

converted mine to discs haystee conversion ,scratching my head at first wheel would not do full revolution ,stupid solid metal counter weight on the inside
of the wheel hitting the caliper ,replaced mine for a set of five tuff torque 16" 5.5 vintage steel white wheels £270 + the dreaded vat
