I have a '82 Series 3, what's the best paint to use on the engine and chassis?

I want to use the orginal colours, can anyone tell me what they are?

The chassis is gavanished (if that makes any difference to what paint can be used)

I'd prefer to apply by brush, for both engine and chassis.

Is the rocker cover painted or just clear coated aluminium? This I can spray!

not sure about the galvanised chassi there is stuff to be had but a galvanised chassis is not the original, the engine block depending how many bearings on the crank shaft, 3 bearing are normaly black, where as the 5 bearing is a terracota red, and the head on mine is black, the rocker cover and air intake are ali, and the fan is black but not sure if this is the original colour, hope this helps.

I know more about the military colours, but here it is for what it's worth....
On a LR of that era

Engines: Military- Sky Blue BS381C - 101 if Recon, otherwise as Civvy
Civvy - ( I think) Red Oxide BS381C- 446
Rocker cover silver unless Military recon; Sky Blue

Gearboxes - No paint

Axles: Military- Black or NATO green BS381C- 285
Civvy - Black
Chassis: Black. Galv chassis will need galv primer. Ordinary paint falls off- even on weathered chassis.
Rarely, some chassis came from the factory in Deep Bronze Green, but not common.

Fan: If it's plastic (and for that year it would have been) then they were usually yellow. Having said that, mine is an '84 S3 and has a metal fan. Colour as per engine, but military has sky blue fan with red tips (so's you can't see the blood).:)

Cheers Fellas.

My fan is metal, currently rusty brown in colour!!!

For painting the galvanised chassis you'll need to use T-wash, acid etch primer then your paint. Think original paint was matt black, I sprayed gloss though (easier to clean and liked the look of the rear cross member).
