i am new here and wonder i can get some help?
i have just changed a front pass side drive shaft and lost loads of oil???
what do i top up and where is it????? cheers

The nearside driveshaft goes through the gearbox casing, so thats where the oil came from.
The filler/level plug is just to the right of where the driveshaft goes through.

i have looked in haynes 97-02 and its not the same as mine(auto bmw lump)
i think its different?

No, driveshaft goes through gearbox casing oil seal and into IRD, only 1/2" gap. IRD has its own seals so no oil is lost from that.

hmmm, not that I am totally sure, but I think oil level in autobox is quite important. maybe do some searches on here as if you get it wrong its about £1000 for autobox change

Ok thankyou All for ur advise.
I Will pop into cradocks today and ask them
and top it up if I can find where to fill it. Lol

What colour is the oil that came out?
What is your car? A diesel auto gearbox Freelander 1?

I think your problem MIGHT be that you are looking in the wrong manual.
The early Haynes does not cover the TD4 engine, I don't know if the auto transmission differed from early to late models but perhaps looking in the correct manual for your vehicle might help?

its a 2001 yreg diesel td4 gs 2litre auto(bmw lump)
the oil that came out was a dark brown colour?#
i went to Craddocks my so called local experts and they sold me
some evolution2 fully synth 75w90 gear oil made by difflock but it says nothing about being used in an auto.....so i have not put it in yet as i need to be reasured by YOU GUYS FIRST? what do you think?
is this the oil i need that came out when i removed the near side drive shaft???

They've sold you IRD oil. Don't put this in the auto. When removing drive shafts the IRD oil will leak out, if not removed before hand. Remove the IRD filler plug below first, then remove the IRD drain plug and empty out the IRD. Then fit the drain plug, fill the IRD up to the filler plug, and refit the plug. Don't remove the drain plug before the filler, as the filler can be a sod to get off some times. shallow soft nut.

i have only purchased 1litre of the evo 2 @ £15.50/litre. so is it ok just to top up the ird with this (upto the filler nut/plug level only)

ps im EMMLOUPY.....
i have just been out and had it on ft ramps and the ird is that full up it spills out when the plug is removed but the worry is where the oil actually come from at the begginning when i removed the drive shaft?? it had a new ird 18 months ago £950
so if anyone could shed a little more light on the matter plz(i understand with it on ft ramps that the oil will pour backward and out of the ird filler)but the amout of oil that came out of the ft pass side drive shaft if about 1 litre at least and that would surely make the ird lower than spilling out when cap off???
thanks in advance guys and previous posts....i hope i will get there before the ££££££

As I said, the nearside drive shaft goes through the gearbox casing to the IRD.
It's gearbox fluid you've lost and needs topping up, not the IRD......see Rave.
Do a search for auto box fluid topping up/changing, and the correct bolts to remove, proper way is to hook it up to Testbook and top up only when fluid between certain temperatures.
