So, back from my holls and yesterday went a for a few hours drive around Salisbury plains…
bit dry, but some areas with mud and water, was a good day.

As my mechanic had the keys to my disco while I was on holidays was also a chance to try things out…
He has put a new rear diff pinion and seal, lower suspension bushes, new diff oil, new gear box oil…. and fixed the handbrake amongst other small jobs he found along the way…

So yesterday on the way home I started getting this knocking sound from the back…
and as you go faster, the sound gets faster too.. at first I thought, probably a stone on the tyre…. but don't think it is as when I press the clutch, the noise stops!
But from the back??? what changes on the back when you press the clutch??

cant understand really….. im driving and it has the knocking sound, clutch in and it stops….?
any ideas what can be??

cheers
JP

Sounds like the diff ... clutch in no pressure on it, no noise, clutch out, power going through. Does it also change sound when on full throttle or coasting?

It's also always worth checking the Prop UJ's, rear doughnut if it has one and that the drive flange bolts and nuts are tight ... mine always come loose a few hundred miles after fitting 'cos I always fit new ones and they 'settle' slightly.

Don't forget though that the Landy transmission and chassis is a collection of hollow tubes that can 'move' sound and what sounds like a problem at the back can actually be something near the front!

Ooo right, so when the clutch is pressed, it does have some effect on the rear diff... I wasnt too sure about that.

Ok, in that case I'm going to speak with my mechanic because he has changed the rear diff pinion and seals as it was leaking...
I would have thought all the nuts and bolbs on the props should be ok as he has done it too...

The UJs and props are ok, no play and always kept greased as I check them every 3 weekends, which is probably every 300 to 400 miles..

It doesnt change noise when on full throttle or slowing down, the only difference is the frequency... faster means more knocking, slowing down the knockin is more spaced...
just like something you would get if there was as stone on the tyre.

could it be something wrong with a drive flange?
or if it was a drive flange it would make the noise no matter if the clutch was pressed or not?

Well.. after having my mechanic jumping around in the back trying to hear the sound, he came to the conclusion it makes the sound no matter if clutch is in or not, just not as loud when the clutch is in...

So today, i've taken the wheel off and the drive flange...and I need new bearings, think that's the noise i was wearing, because yesterday the noise went from a knocking to sometimes a grinding noise...

Problem with having tyres like the ones I have is you cant hear when a bearing is starting to make that wooooooooo sound..
