Whats this part of the heater unit?

Looks like a small transformer?

The three wires from the engine bay go to this and it kicks out two wires to the motor.

I've taken out the motor as it's stopped working, can I just run a 12 volt supply to it to test it?

12v direct to motor is just the same as speed two on the dash, the resistor pictured just drops the motor speed but the resistor still receives 12 volts and it dumps the excess heat into the air flow.
The motor is most likely a seized shaft bush fan end so you cant see it or lube it.
The motors are bloody expensive 70/80 quid and theres no piont in 2nd hand as Ive seen two 200 era heater motors seized in the last month.

Thanks chaps. Yeh I saw that. The resisters are £100 too. The shaft spins so hopefully it's something else. Will test it on the bench

So the fan works fine. Can't quite get my head round how to test the resister and the wiring diagram doesn't help much. There are 2 green wires and a purple. The purple is live according to the wiring diagram. On the bench What should I do with the green wires to test it?

Worked it out, it's actually pretty simple. Just run either green to earth. Resister works so must be the dash control. Seals were rotten so glad it took the whole think out

Forget the LR resistor and get one of these which will do the same job, just solder it in. It's in this fred here.

Nice one Doriz, so according to that thread a 10w 10ohm resister is the order of the day?

I read the post, did some research and bought the said resistor off Fleabay - I have two full defender 200 tdi heaters ready for rebuild and plan to bend the new part in once I have the resprayed them. I have one working original resistor unit which I will use I this COA fails, though I suspect it won't.

Sounds good. Just to check its the 10w 10ohm resister right? I think I'll do the same as you

I think this might be it. I have taken the motor out of a Freelander 1 and adapted the snail shell blower to take the slightly bigger motor. I refuse to pay silly money for an original motor and the early test results are quite positive.

I standby to be lambasted for visiting another "fender site - but it were fer research only.

Great. Thanks. I'll order one of those and see what's what. I've got the original resister as a back up
