What is it?

OK, hi everyone, just bought my 1st Series III. It is a 109" 2 1/4 petrol in red 1974.
I'm sure a lot of you will laugh at the question, buy with no owners manual I'm stuck.
Controls.
What are the levers for. Now there are 5.
1. Gear stick, not too hard to work out

2. Hand brake
3. Yellow knob ?
4. Red Knob?
5. a lever in front of the middle seat that goes to the back of the gearbox to a box with fairley on it.
Can you tell me what they are, what they do, how to use them?

No 5 is the Overdrive unit. it gives you better cruising speed and improves MPG.

Red and yellow are high/low selector and 2wd /4wd stick.

Red's high and low range. (2 sets of drive gears, high is normal, low is lower gearing for off road stuff)

Yellow is 4 wheel drive ( but dont know when to turn it on and why apart from offroad)

Fairey is an overdrive unit, better top speed and increases MPG

red knob forward, yellow knob up = 2WD High
red knob back, yellow knob up = 4WD Low
red knob forward, yellow knob down = 4WD High

to get out of 4WD High, move red knob back then forward.

5th lever is not necessary - remove lever and attachment on back of transfer box and send them to me.

So what is the story with no 5? It seems to have 3 positions? How does it work?

it won't work,they never do.i'll give you scrap value which is about 5 quid and the parts to put it back to standard.pm me if interested.

if you must use it.....

Start with the stick pulled back towards the seat (the out position) when you are in 4th and the engines screaming (well you think its the engine anyway) put the clutch down and shove it all the way forward (the in position) you are now in a sort of 5th gear. The position in the middle is neutral and is pointless (well I have never found a use for it apart from when parked!)

Basically the overdrive gives you one gear up whatever gear you are in, so if you are in 3rd and you shove it forward you are in a sort of 4th. If you then change to 4th you are in 5th. there is no need to take the overdrive out when changing gear, but you shouldn't pull away in any gear with overdrive in the in position.

Clear as mud?

i find the neutral position of the overdrive was good for preventing the girlfriend from borrowing me truck...... problem is she just takes me other one now..

When your gearstick breaks off at the ball , then the overdrive gives you an emergency neutral , in the middle position , useful for crisis management.
