Fuel line decides to leak as I pull into the ASDA car park (as they do)

So when I get under I discover the leak is where it attaches to this Gizmo,
http://www.larry-arnold.info/landrover/whatisit.jpg which was originally
wrapped in pipe lagging and layers of tape then attached to the side of the
oil filler tube.

Now whatever it is, I am sure it should not be there,

Any ideas and do I need it ?

It's not one of these snake oil devices that claims to decrease your
fuel consumption is it? Can you poke a wire through it or is there
something inside?

The lagging suggests that there may have been a fuel vaporisation problem.

I'd be inclined to ditch it.

It looks decidedly home made.
Probably just a bodge to join a broken pipe with whatever plumbing was
availabke at the time.
Dump it, (in the tool box) just in case like.

The large diameter corrogated tube and nuts looks *very* much like a
15mm flexable copper pipe used in water plumbing to connect taps to
fixed pipework...

Could the orginal pipe chaffed through on something at this point and
this is a (longwinded, enginering) solution? Do the adapters down to
narrow bore pipe have a "home made look 'n feel"?

Yes it definatly looks home made, and like a piece of plumbing, seems an
altogether bizarre solution when all that is needed is a piece of braided
petrol hose, notwithstanding I have just had to pay £6.99 at the local car
accessory store for such.

What length of braided hose did you get for your money - the braided fuel
hose I sell is £24 a metre and the right stuff. If you have bought from a
car shop what is billed as 'braided injection hose' sort of stuff then get
ready to replace it again in the next 12 months!!

It took me 3 years to convince one chap to do his fuel system with the
proper stuff but once he finally got the message ( 6 changes of crappy stuff
! ) he thought the £200 it cost him to do it once and for all was a bargain!

Sorry to moan on about crappy hose but it just touches a raw nerve of mine
that a lot of the stuff out there actually makes my stuff look expensive
when if you actually looked at the pertormance oif the stuff rather than the
'brilliant price' you would run a mile from the cheapo

Not really 100% on topic just an opportunity to help people avoid buting
cack stainless braid hose!!

Almost another shameless plug !!

Well I shall just have to use plastic siphon tubing like Lambretta scooters
used, to cheap and can be replaced every month if need be :)
