What have you done to your Freelander today

Finished cleaning and treating the leather - fitted the seats and wired up the heated seats [man that large back seat is a heavy job to lug around! ]- it was a good opportunity to give the inside a thorough clean! Also fitted a lit passenger sun visor. The cloth seats are still in very good condition - I'll give them a clean and bag them - now I'll have to find somewhere to store them :D
 
MOT time again, so a tense morning waiting for the result. All good though. So she goes to live another year hopefully. Being 20 years old, the corrosion is now starting to take hold more underneath. Not an advisory yet, but they guy did say I probably need to keep an eye on corrosion. So I expect next year's spring/summer project will be to get underneath with a wire brush and get filthy with some treatment. It will probably be one or both subframes off and give them some attention too.

In the run up to the MOT I had been doing the normal servicing stuff and attending to various niggles. The new gas strut on the rear door has made a huge difference, and almost dangerous opening it now, having got used to having to pull the door for so long. The rear brake drums were looking pretty dire, flaking with several layers of deep rust, so it was time to replace them (always good fun playing with those springs on the shoes). Before putting the new drums on I gave them a few coats of Smoothrite or whatever it's called now. Smartest thing on the vehicle now!

Now I can go buy another year of road tax which always tempers the jubilation of passing the test.

The quality seems to be pretty good.
 
Got an odd ‘noise’ that sounds like it’s at the OSF. It shouldn’t be any of the bushes as they were replaced along with the bottom arms earlier this year. Investigated it as the MOT’s on Tuesday but no joy. Then got sidetracked into cleaning the gunk from behind the mud flap. Then got properly rained off, so had to watch the rugby World Cup.

After passing its MOT earlier in the week, some bad news. while out and about yesterday, and more specifically while I was on a dual carriageway roundabout, ready to take the second left exit, some idiot towing a long glider trailer takes the inside of the roundabout at speed, loses control and veers into my offside. Grhhh!

Not too much damage to my vehicle; new wheel arch trims needed, some light scuffing from the side indicator, leading to a more serious score in the lower driver‘s door. But with the vehicle being 20 years old, I think it’s the end of the line, and will just be written off. Bit of a bummer after all the time, money and effort getting things running in largely tip top condition.

I know there is possibly scope to accept a settlement and buy the vehicle back, which as I have no plans in selling on, doesn’t bother me financially in it being a Cat N? writeof. But I get the impression insurance companies are not that keen on that approach any longer.

I have a couple of witnesses that kindly offered their help in seeing the idiotic driving. It’s heartening to see that people stop and offered genuine concern about my well-being in a world that seemed to be so self-centred nowadays.

At least no one was hurt in this incident. But another lot of hassle to deal with.

Take care folks, the idiots are everywhere!

I've repaired several CAT N (cosmetic damage only) vehicles, and have absolutely no problems with insurance. The wife's current Audi A5 convertible is a CAT N, which needed some cosmetic work done to the driver's side wing and lower bumper. It cost a few hundred to fix a car worth over £7k, but cost me under ½ its value buy and repair.

If the insurance company does CAT N it, then take the money and retain the vehicle, then fix it up and continue to use it. ;)

Thinking about it. If it wasn't your fault, you have a right to have your vehicle returned to it's pre-crash condition, regardless of it costing more than its value.
The other party insurance can't by law put you an innocent party out of pocket.

Doing the front brakes this weekend
found one new calliper and one original so ordered one off amazon last night just to be on safe side and shock horror it’s not arrived as of 18:45 very annoyed so it’s on axle stands till next weekend

But as 4Bee 4 Bee as had a worse weekend than me I will stop feeling sorry for myself

Thanks for your replies regarding my FL1’s potential demise. Amazing to know someone the other side of the globe knows about what happened on a grey drizzly afternoon here in the UK.

Reassuring Nodge to hear that a Cat N could still be a viable option going forward. And the follow up message about the no fault situation. I have witnesses, but we’ll have to see how the other guy plays it.

it’s a 3-door Zambezi silver hippo, Andy. And thanks for the offer. Depending how things pan out, I may well be in touch.

Took my FL2 into the garage for a service and MOT this morning. Got a phone call saying rear subframe rotten, do you want to come and have a look.
So I went and had a look.
Subframe rotten right enough. I could poke my finger through it around two of the mounting bushes.
Garage putting a parts and labour quote together for me.

To fix, or not to fix, that is the question.
The car is 16 years old and has done 222k miles. It's worth very little in the grand scheme of things.
On the other hand it has been, and still is, reliable and comfortable. To change it for something of similar quality will cost many £k.

Decision time looms.

Just replace the subframe. I'll be doing mine in a couple of years.

Second hand subframe is about £350, or a new replacement is about £700, which is the way I'll be going. It's not a particularly difficult or long job to replace the subframe, especially for a suitably equipment garage.
