Hello Sing.
How was the brake test done?

Hi JonFre,

The tester used a Tapley Meter - a bit like a cross between a gyroscope and a ship's compass in gimbals it stays horizontal and records acceleration and deceleration. They need to be tested and re-calibrated if necessary every six months I think, so you cant argue with it. Tester says they are accurate to within 1% of the reading you get on a set of rollers.

Sits on the passenger side floor.

The tester zeros it then drives up to about 30mph in a straight line then brakes.

My footbrake gave a reading of 66% - he didn't brake that hard though - certainly nothing like an 'emergency stop'.

The handbrake gave a reading of 42%

I think the minimum figures needed are 50% and 20% but I was so happy that it passed after the work done that I forgot to ask.

Singvogel.

I ordered some dehumidifier bags for the dash today as I'm fed up of waiting hours for the windscreen to dry and clear in the mornings. Not sure they'll work, but figured it's worth a try...

Thanks Singvogel for the info. I asumed you would not want your pride & joy on rollers! I always use a MOT station that has a Tapley, apart from no harm to transmission I think it's a preferable way of testing the brakes - you certainly know the car will stop in real time.
IIRC I last used aTapley many, many years ago when I was running Bedford TK lorries. and was playing with the brakes o get them thro the HGV test.

Renewed rear door handle (My fault, I thought it was jammed and tried lifting the door as I opened it. The £150 handle came away in my hand...so I HAD to buy the nice 2004 TD4 HSE:D)

Found this inside the rear door

Scrubbed it out and cleared the drain holes.

Also fitted my towbar and bike rack.

Painted rear brake drums (well worth it) and a few other gravel blasted bits.

Noticed rusted brake pipes! Need to look into renewing the lot and be done with it. They are covered in Qartzite gloop and salt most of the time down here.

Bought another wheel cylinder as I only got 1 thinking they come in packs of 2. Also payed attention to the main page of "euro car parts" web site where it says things like... parts25 battery15 and clutch25 ... after the sales help line pointed them out to me. ;)

Power-washed off the mud - again.

Off-road every day is fun - and I'll never tire of it - but keeping the beast clean is wearing me out.

Also had to clean and oil all door-jambs, hinges, catches, and locks, as the mud is getting everywhere.

Tried to do the one wheel up vcu test,
jacked the car up.
marked wheel arch at 45 degrees,
made 4ft long socket bar,
filled loads of old plastic milk bottles up with water,
went to weigh them and electronic scales wont work on anything under 6kg,
Need to borrow some scales and will try again

Solved an annoying RH front knocking noise on my '04 TD4 by fitting new LR anti-roll bar bushes, (good luck getting the bolts out if you have to do it).

Finished off my deep clean by scrubbing out the boot.

Spotted a rear propshaft UJ gone at the diff input. Propshaft overhaul next.

It's easy to work out weight of water by volume. 1 litre weighs 1Kg ;)

Tried to fix sunroof with kit from ebay but had more broken bits than kit supplied,
did manage to get it to shut flat though so sealed it temporarily with some vaseline (well they are called gaylanders after all) and unplugged motor, job for the summer I think.
Washed it, hoovered it and handed it over to the Missus to use from now on.

EGR bypass (stainless stell)
BMW vortex filter
Silicon hoses (non-bling black)
Chopped off CAT - replaced with straight thru pipe
4x Yokohama Geolander H/T tyres
New droplinks
Touched up paintwork with LR (Java Black) stick
New rear diff mount (central one)
Replaced factory stereo and speakers (steering wheel controls still work)

now .... just have to find those damn fog bezels ... too expensive to get painted black, so trying to find chromed ones ... Light Bezel Chrome (1 Pair) - Pair totalparts.co.uk ... gonna be blingy
