What have you done to your Freelander today

Finished our Christmas Tour, 1200 km trip to eastern Finland. Typical Finnish winter weather, got some freezing cold. snowing and slush. Today we drove back home 450 km and first 250 km it was snowing heavily but that changed to a pouring rain in southern Finland. We had our both dogs with us, travelling in the boot of 2 seater Freelander. There's ample of space for hovawart and german longhaired pointer male and our bags and stuff.

Have to say FL1 TD4 drives so damn good in these arctic conditions. It's so stable and confident even when you have other side wheels in slush/deeper snow and other side on ice. I have been driving quite expensive 4wd cars during last 10 years and this 18 years old Hippo is at least on par with those 60-70k€ cars. Hopefully these pictures show on this post, tried to post from my laptop this time.

Nice write up and great pics.

You must have lots of confidence in the car to be driving at 90-100ks on ice while taking photos

We are used to this kind of driving conditions here, it's like this for 4-5 months a year. And you change gears too and turn heat on also with your right hand while driving and won't crash?

Photos look fake to me - or at least not a Freelander. That clock on the dash has far to many working digits for a Freelander.

Loosing any pixels of my wonderful "infotainment screen" would be catastrophic! Hope they make Android Automotive that runs on that clock screen.

New air filter and an oil change today.

Just got back from an 8 day, 1100 mile round trip visiting friends and relatives. Averaged 34.7mpg; mostly at motorway speeds.
Over 214,000 miles on the odometer now. Intermittent 3 amigos problem leaving me without Terrain Response, HDC, or (worse) ABS on occasion.
Now I’m home I’ll investigate further. Either faulty right hand rear wheel sensor or possibly a break in the wiring harness.

Engine oil and filter time today, after our Christmas tour. I've been changing oil+filter 3000 km intervals now.

Today I got a delivery of a replacement EGR assembly, and a gasket to seal it in place.
It was second hand so I'll need to pressure check the cooler matrix before I install it.
That's a job for tomorrow, if the weather will actually allow me to get outside without getting wet.
I think I'll pump the cooler to 40 PSI and see if it holds the pressure for a week. If so I'll be installing it next weekend, if the weather plays ball.

Where do I start?

Replaced rear window regulator, and now trying to figure out if the weird sh1t it is doing is normal.
Finally got rear door to open (Helps when you fit a fuse ), but that's another post.
Tried to fix no reversing lights, and after bulbs and multi meter figured out most likey reversing switch in the Gear box
New clutch Master servo and crank case baffle filter arrived today, so that to do tomorrow.
Went to change the roof aerial with a new one I bought, got old one stripped out and now cant find the fecking new one. Had to refit the old (Broken) one. So a search of all known hidey holes around the house tomorrow, , as well as some interogation of key family members.... and Ill try again. Can only get Radio one on the broken aerial....

Not a bad day, fixed 2 items and found 3 More...and Ill not even start about the weird hum...

Picked up a Landy full of FL1 spares: door locks, window mechs, switches, lights, cd players, throttle bodies, relays etc.... Guy selling up. Started to list on Ebay.

Did full service on year 2000 TD4.
Bought a year ago with 27k miles. Now 37k.
Pcv filter looked original as did turbo and air filter. All checked over ok. Noted slight hairline cracks and slight hissing of air on header tank.

Presumably there should be hissing of air on the header tank - its designed to allow air to escape as the coolant heats and expands, then let it back in when the engine cools. It just needs to keep the correct pressure.

On the year 2000 model it had a solid non vented cap on the header. The hissing is from the cracks in the tank.

But, you raise an interesting point. Where does it expand and contract Guess that's why it is called an expansion tank ??

The water expands in the system and compresses the air in the expansion tank. Hence the name.
The pressure cap is designed to hold a good amount of pressure, which increases the boiling point of the coolant to well above 100°C. Cracking of the expansion tank will reduce the pressure in the tank which will increase the liklihood of coolant boiling, although that's not normal an issue on the cool running TD4.

Thanks for explanation. The older 2000 MY downstairs have a pressure relief cap. The hairline cracks are not causing a problem at the moment but will change the tank. I can't find a supply of the early type with the smaller neck to accept the fixed cap with no pressure relief valve fitted. Anyone spotted them please ??

The TD4 runs cool and doesnt appear to mind air ingress but the pinhole on the V6 radiator caused boiling and was very hard to locate !

The smaller early expansion tank was discontinued after 2001 MY update. This was due to there being insufficient capacity to take the volume of expanded coolant.
The later expansion tank will fit, it's just a lot larger which give sufficient capacity for coolant expansion.

The KV6 runs right at the limit of the cooling system ability, and it runs hot as a result.
The normal operating temperature of the KV6 is 95 to 100°C, which is why its so hard on the cooling system components like O rings, hoses, thermostat and so on.
